Q Who was the first African American to attend West Point?
Columbia native James Webster Smith was the first African American to attend the United States Military Academy, popularly known as West Point. He began his studies in 1870 and stayed enrolled for four years, but, because of racial prejudice, he was forced to leave without receiving his military commission. Mr. Smith's commission and second lieutenant's bars were posthumously presented on 22 September 1997.
