    May 11 , 2013 by Bland L.

May is National Bike Month, and the week of 13-17 May is Bike to Work Week.  If you have been toying with the idea of bike commuting, why not give it a try this week?  On Friday the 17th, riders will be meeting at the State House steps at 8:00AM for a ride down Main St. to Mast General Store to show their support for bike commuting in Columbia.  There will also be several other bike-related events, sponsored by the Columbia Bicycle Pedestrian Advisory Committee, taking place throughout the month.  Visit the website of the Palmetto Cycling Coalition to learn more about these events.  In the meantime, check out some of the Richland Library's books on bicycling to learn more about biking safely, maintaining your bike, and much more.

  8. Micro Gardens for Kids

    April 18 , 2013 by Sarah Graham

Every spring without fail, I host a gardening-themed storytime at Richland Library Northeast. Watching seeds sprout, buds open, and flowers drop away to reveal a tiny green bean or tomato is inherently exciting and educational, and let’s admit it – kids love to play in the dirt. But gardening is even more important in our urban and suburban community, where children are rarely exposed to food in its original state. Good nutrition is easier to encourage when your child is involved with the process, witnessing the magical transformation from seed to plant to lunch.
