Nursery Rhymes

How many nursery rhymes do you know? Can you think of 8 of them? If a child knows 8 nursery rhymes by heart by the time he is 4, he will likely be among the best readers by the time he’s 8. Let imaginations run away with the dish and the spoon by singing, saying and reading the rhymes you love, and unearth some new favorites to share.

Crafts and Activities:

  • Line up with Jack be Nimble by calling out the children’s names and having them jump over a faux candle or bean bag.
  • Act out rhymes assigning roles to children or brave adults.
  • Read The Three Little Kittens and then match up mittens (real or paper).
  • Celebrate Hey Diddle Diddle by decorating paper plates and spoons (you can use plastic spoons covered in aluminum foil or create your own template).
  • Teach the rhymes you know by heart along with some less commonly used ones like Davy Davy Dumpling or The Noble Duke of York.

Nursery Rhymes to Share:

Hey Diddle Diddle
Hey, diddle diddle,
the cat and the fiddle.
The cow jumped over the moon.
The little dog laughed to see such sport
And the dish ran away with the spoon.

Little Miss Muffet
Little Miss Muffet,
sat on a tuffet, (sit up very straight, hands folded neatly in lap)
Eating her curds and whey;(Pretend to be eating)
Along came a spider,
who sat down beside her (stretch one arm up high, wiggle the hand while lowering it down onto your shoulder)
And frightened Miss Muffet away. (Raise hands up in a gesture of surprise, then move them as if jogging)

One, Two, Buckle My Shoe
One, two, buckle my shoe;
Three, four, knock on the door;
Five, six, pick up sticks;
Seven, Eight, lay them straight;
Nine, ten, a big fat hen. (or Nine, ten, let’s do it again.)

Davy Davy Dumpling
Davy Davy dumpling,
Boil him in a pot. (stirring an imaginary pot)
Sugar him and butter him (tossing in the ingredients)
And eat him while he’s hot! (hands to mouth, pretending to eat)

Amazon Says: “One, two, buckle my shoe. Three, four, shut the door. . . . Nine, ten, big fat hen!” “Baker uses an imaginative array of acrylic colors for his hens--greens, purples, and pinks to contrast with the warm, yellow straw background. There are lots of things to count, such as sticks, eggs, chicks, and hens. A fine choice for toddler story hours.”--School Library Journal less...

Amazon Says: The farmer and his wife are so intent on preparing for the birth of their baby, they don't notice that their animals are acting a little . . . unusual. During the day, the animals moo and quack and neigh as always. But at night, when the farmer and his wife sleep, the animals gather in the barn to work on a big surprise--a musical treat to welcome the new baby! Will Hillenbrand brings to this traditional song the imaginative touch that made his Down by the Station a shining success. He has created a world filled with the magic of nighttime--and an exuberant celebration of the joy of a newborn. Sheet music for the song is featured with the text. less...
