Mr. Pinkney eloquently describes his artistic process in this way: "A sense of community has always been important to me, and I want that to be reflected in my art. When I speak of community, I am not only talking about the immediate world around me, but also legacy. I am always searching for projects that connect with my culture and the experience of being Black in America. I love the act of making marks on paper, and seeing those marks develop into a picture. How rewarding it is to just sit, observe, and paint! But I am a storyteller at heart, which is why I was drawn to picture books. Each project begins with the question, ‘Is this story worth telling?’.“

Augusta Baker's Dozen: A Celebration of Stories, now in its 31st year, honors the life and work of nationally-known librarian and storyteller Augusta Baker.

This event is sponsored by Richland Library, Richland Library Friends, and USC School of Library and Information Science. Special thanks to C. G. Fuller Foundation, Bank of America, N.A., Trustee., Historic Columbia, and Richland County School District One for making this celebration possible.

Amazon Says: Nothing can stop John Henry-no boulder, no mountain, and definitely no steam drill.  Newbery Honor winner Julius Lester writes with such power that this African-American folk hero becomes as awesome as a natural phenomenon.  Jerry Pinkney received a Caldecott Honor for his exuberant, glowing watercolor paintings of the hero.  The book, celebrating its tenth year in print, was also a Boston Globe-Horn Book Award winner, a Parents magazine Best Book, and an ALA Notable Book, among other honors. less...

Amazon Says: Caldecott Medal-winning illustrator Jerry Pinkney and Newbery Honor-winning author Julius Lester team up in thi groundbreaking and delightful update of one of the most controversial stories in children’s literature. Hailed by Publishers Weekly as “hip and hilarious.”   From the creators of the Caldecott Honor-winning John Henry comes a reimagining of Helen Bannerman’s Little Black Sambo. Julius Lester uses his inimitable black southern storytelling voice to bring new life and laughter to Sam, a little boy with bright new clothes who encounters a group of tigers on his way to school. Like his breathtaking animal illustrations in The Lion and the Mouse and The Talking Eggs, Jerry Pinkney’s tigers prowl off the page and leap into the imagination. All of the Lester and Pinkney trademarks are present: wit, humor, and the perfect marriage of words and images, making this classic folktale accessible to new generations.     “A hip and hilarious retelling that marries the essence of the original with an innovative vision of its own.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)   ALA Notable Book American Bookseller Pick of the Lists Book Links Best Book of the Year Booklist Editors’ Choice Children’s Books Mean Business School Library Journal Best Book of the Year Washington Irving Children’s Choice Award less...

Amazon Says: Three-time Caldecott Honor artist Jerry Pinkney brings new relevance to the classic Hans Christian Andersen story The wintry streets of an American city are thronged with shoppers, in preparation for New Year's Eve. But no one is interested in buying the matches and artificial flowers offered by one little girl. Wishing to avoid the cold welcome awaiting her at home, she lights her matches for what little heat they can provide. The visions that she sees in their flickering glow warm her spirit, even as the brutal cold of night destroys her body. Three-time Caldecott Honor winner Jerry Pinkney's interpretation of this famous Hans Christian Andersen tale transforms the little Danish girl into a child drawn straight out of the American melting pot--a child who is of no easily identifiable culture, and so is of them all. The poignancy and immediacy of Pinkney's art draw the reader into the early twentieth-century streets, to witness how the poor can be invisible in the midst of the wealthy--a condition Andersen would instantly recognize. less...

This all-female band, originating from a boarding school in the heart of Mississippi, found its way to the most famous ballrooms in the country, offering solace during the hard years of the war.
