St Andrews Chess Club
In late 2011, Richland Library St. Andrews and the Columbia Chess Club formed an alliance and started the St. Andrews Chess Club. It has been one of the most successful and well attended recurring programs we have had at our location. It is always suprising how many people are enthusiasts for the game. One of the best things about it is that it attracts people of all ages and skill levels and suprisingly some of the young players are every bit as good as the older ones.
Over the years we have had special guests like International Chess master John Bartholomew who gave a guest lecture about the first time he won a match against an internationally ranked player at age 15. At the ripe old age of 27 he now travels throughout the US playing in tournaments and teaching chess.
Two tournament directors from the Columbia Chess Club Bob and Jordan have hosted several USCF (United States Chess Federation) rated chess tournaments. USCF members can earn an official rating by playing some of the best players in the metro area. Another 4 week tournament has been scheduled starting Monday April 28th.
