Urban Readers: New Book Club at the Main Library

Are you looking for new books to read and discuss? If so, one of the library's newest book clubs just might be for you. The group meets Tuesdays at 6pm, every other month, at the Main Library. So, what's so different about this group? The selections focus on African American literature including fiction and non-fiction.

The next meeting is tomorrow, December 4th, at 6pm in the Bank of America Conference Room on the 1st Level of the Main Library. We'll talk about Common's autobiography, One Day It'll All Make Sense. This book was loved so much by those who read it in August that we decided to continue the discussion in December! If you read the book a while ago, that's okay! We'd still love to see you at the book group. If you started reading but didn't finish, that's okay too! We'd still like you to join us.

If this title interests you, then you might enjoy reading some of the books below. If you have any questions about the Urban Readers Book Group, contact Crystal at 929-3400. Happy reading!

Amazon Says: If asked to list the greatest innovators of modern American poetry, few of us would think to include Jay-Z or Eminem in their number. And yet hip hop is the source of some of the most exciting developments in verse today. The media uproar in response to its controversial lyrical content has obscured hip hop’s revolution of poetic craft and experience: Only in rap music can the beat of a song render poetic meter audible, allowing an MC’s wordplay to move a club-full of eager listeners.Examining rap history’s most memorable lyricists and their inimitable techniques, literary scholar Adam Bradley argues that we must understand rap as poetry or miss the vanguard of poetry today. Book of Rhymes explores America’s least understood poets, unpacking their surprisingly complex craft, and according rap poetry the respect it deserves. less...
