Five Manga That Return To England

While manga is the Japanese word for comics, its origins have a British mix that many fans have yet to discover.

Comics historian Helen McCarthy delves into the influence of late 19th-century British illustrator Charles Wirgman on contemporary manga in the Youtube link below. Today, Victorian England is a hotbed for genre fiction, from the upstairs-downstairs drama of Downton Abbey to sleuth extraordinaire Sherlock Holmes. Manga series use Victorian England as a fertile setting too, from the gothic monsters of Soulless and Black Butler to the dramatic romance of Emma and supernatural adventures of Clockwork Angel and D. Gray-man. These series are examples of comics' ability to stir various cultural influences and genres into fresh, new stories.
