3M Cloud Library
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the 3M Cloud Library?
The 3M Cloud Library is a new way for libraries to lend eBooks. With the 3M Cloud Library, library customers use their personal Richland Library accounts to access e-books for their devices. They can check out a book on an iPad, take notes while reading on a PC, and finish the book on an Android phone or Nook HD. The bookmark feature works across most devices, so readers do not lose their places. Customers can read when, where and how they want.
What is a beta test?
Before software or websites are considered “final products” ready for general usage, they undergo a testing phase, often called beta testing. We are taking part in this for the 3M Cloud Library, alongside 11 other libraries from around the country.

Richland Library currently has twenty 3M eReaders that will let customers try ebooks from the 3M Cloud Library without buying a device.
It does not require a credit card and synchronizes easily with the 3M Cloud Library. 3M eReaders can only be used with the 3M Cloud Library; they cannot be used for reading commercial or OverDrive eBooks. 3M eReaders may be checked out at the Information Desk at the Main Library with an Richland Library card number. They are returned to the desk (and not to bookdrops)
Can 3M eReaders be put on hold?
During the beta testing, 3M eReaders cannot be placed on hold. They can be picked up at the Main Library’s 1st floor information desk. Telephone holds may be made by the public.
How do our customers get library eBooks onto a 3M eReader?
Download software will be installed on a designated library staff PC very near the information desk.
Customers can checkout ebooks through the Discovery Terminal or through the Website
After checking out a 3M eReader, patrons can then go to the designated Download Station at the information desk to have the material they checked out loaded onto a 3M e-Reader by the library staff.
When the patron returns the e-Reader, the staff uses the Download Station to reset the e-Reader, preparing it for use by the next patron
What’s my library card number?

Will 3M ebooks work with a Kindle?
Amazon, the company that created the Kindle, requires that lending library companies have an agreement with them in order to offer Kindle compatibility. 3M is in negotiations with Amazon. We have been informed that Amazon had asked 3M to postpone negotiations until June 2012. As this item is updated we will keep staff and the public informed.
I do not see the newest books by my favorite author, and they are a popular author regularly on the bestseller list. Why don’t you have them?
Some publishers are still trying to decide how to approach allowing libraries to purchase or license digital copies of their books (be it ebooks or e-audiobooks). Some of these publishers are currently not selling new ebooks to lending libraries at all. For instance, one of these is the publisher that sells books by James Patterson, a commonly requested author.
