Want to Write a Novel? Camp NaNoWriMo is this July

"I want to write a novel someday.” Does this sound like you? Ready to turn that someday into today? Well, here is your chance!

Camp NaNoWriMo is a 31 day web-based writing challenge; this July 1st – 31st sponsored by National Novel Writing Month. Just like in the original NaNoWriMo, which takes place every November, Camp NaNo participants pledge to write a 50,000 word novel during the assigned 1 month/30 day period. (July is cheating; we get an extra day this go round.) 50,000 words. 31 days. Those are the only rules. The writing doesn’t have to be perfect. The novel doesn’t have to be complete at the 50k mark. You just gotta get the words.

Writing a novel can be a daunting task, but there are strategies for success. You’re going to need dedication, hard work, and the ability to keep writing even on days when you just don’t want to. But perhaps most importantly, you're going to need a deadline.

In No Plot? No Problem!, his book about writing and the NaNoWriMo experience, Chris Baty emphasizes the importance of establishing a deadline when writing a novel. ---

Deadlines bring focus, forcing us to make time for the achievements we would otherwise postpone, encouraging us to reach beyond our conservative estimates of what we think is possible, helping us to wrench victory from the jaws of sleep.

Chris Baty - No Plot? No Problem!

So, what’s holding you back? If you’re ready to turn that great idea for a novel into a real working draft, consider signing up for Camp NaNoWriMo this July!

Amazon Says: "If you don't have the time to read, you don't have the time or the tools to write." In 1999, Stephen King began to write about his craft -- and his life. By midyear, a widely reported accident jeopardized the survival of both. And in his months of recovery, the link between writing and living became more crucial than ever. Rarely has a book on writing been so clear, so useful, and so revealing. On Writing begins with a mesmerizing account of King's childhood and his uncannily early focus on writing to tell a story. A series of vivid memories from adolescence, college, and the struggling years that led up to his first novel, Carrie, will afford readers a fresh and often very funny perspective on the formation of a writer. King next turns to the basic tools of his trade -- how to sharpen and multiply them through use, and how the writer must always have them close at hand. He takes the reader through crucial aspects of the writer's art and life, offering practical and inspiring advice on everything from plot and character development to work habits and rejection. Serialized in the New Yorker to vivid acclaim, On Writing culminates with a profoundly moving account of how King's overwhelming need to write spurred him toward recovery, and brought him back to his life. Brilliantly structured, friendly and inspiring, On Writing will empower -- and entertain -- everyone who reads it. less...
