Cover Letters and Pick-Up Lines

As I write this post, it is Valentine’s Day and I am thinking about my hot date tonight with my husband… and 2 kids… and nephew… and mother… at Pizza Man’s 2 for $10 Thursday Night special. (Don't be too sad for me; I am actually very excited because these are my favorite people and Pizza Man french fries are from heaven.) Valentines is about making someone feel special. (I promise I have a point!) And so are cover letters! (Ah… there it is.)
My friend recently posted a job on Craigslist and received an emailed cover letter from an applicant. This enthusiastic job seeker waxed on about how much she would love to be a part of “your” company and how she was confident her skills were perfectly suited for “this” position. Unfortunately, the applicant included over 50 email addresses in the “To” box. Oops… this does not make a potential employer feel special.
Cover letters are like your first impression when you’re on a date. They should introduce you and engage your “date”, be specific and speak to what your “date” is interested in, and highlight your best assets. There is NO form cover letter just like there is no one way to charm a date. If you are still using some generic cover letter you copied off the internet, throw it in the same trash bin as this pick-up line: “Do you believe in love at first sight, or should I walk by again?”
