1963 Our Story Matters

With Dignity, Honor, Courage

The beginning of the 1963 New Year did not start out quietly in South Carolina. Harvey Gantt and
Clemson University dominated the headlines in Columbia’s The State and Columbia
Record newspapers.

The title of thispost comes from an editorial in the Columbia Record on January 29, 1963 that
goes on to say, “To the everlasting credit of public officials…South Carolina
met the day with peace and dignity. To young Harvey Gantt, a full measure of
credit is due. He wants no publicity; he asks no press conferences.”

Follow along with the Walker Local and Family History Center as we feature civil rights news
from 1963 articles in The State or Columbia Record.
