Eartha Kitt (1927-2009)

Eartha Kitt began her 1956 biography, Thursday's Child, with this simple fact:

“I was born in a little town called North in South Carolina.”

Putting together the pieces of Kitt's childhood is difficult because she was so young when her mother died. This image of the Orangeburg 1930 census shows a three year old adopted child named Eartha living with Rosa and Joseph Connor. Eartha did live with her Aunt Rosie so this may be a snapshot of Eartha Kitt before she moved to Harlem.

What we do know is that this South Carolinian was to become a world famous entertainer and a 1960's icon and personality.
