House Genealogy

In 1920 an Aladdin mill opened in Wilmington, NC and Aladdin kit houses became a popular house construction alternative in early Columbia neighborhoods. If you own an Aladdin kit house search the online catalogs to find the model that best matches your home.

Other resources for researching the history of your home include the Columbia city directories. The Richland Library collection starts in 1859. There is a gap until 1875 and then the collection is fairly complete to 2012. A collection of the early directories are available online through the Local History Digital Collection.

The State newspaper is another great resource for finding information about Columbia houses and residents. Richland Library contracted to make digital copies of The State available for Richland County card holders through South Carolina Historical Newspapers.
