New Year… New Job Search Strategy
It’s a New Year and may be time to adopt a new strategy for your job search. Whether you are unemployed, underemployed, or looking for a career change, with the right tools and strategies, you can find fulfilling employment in 2013.
Strategy: Be Proactive! Search for Companies Where You Want to Work Not Just Jobs
In 2013, stop looking for jobs! Well, not entirely. We will still be looking for jobs in 2013 but career experts say that as many as 80% of jobs are not advertised! So, this year, it’s all about working backwards… identifying the employers for whom we want to work and researching opportunities within that company. Here are some tips to consider:
Don’t Rely on Online Job Boards: According to a 2012 survey by CareerXroads of hiring managers from top companies, only 20.1% of new hires were the result of advertising on Job Boards and only 9.8% from Career Sites. We have to move on beyond job boards.
Don’t Randomly Send Out or Upload Resumes: Only 1% of job seekers are successful sending resumes blindly to every job that pops up on a job board. Online resume posting only yields an 8% chance of success of uncovering the next opportunity. Sending resumes to targeted companies will be far more productive.
Identify Companies You Want to Work For: Target at least 10 employers you would like to work for and develop a plan to meet the right decision makers. Find ways to connect with that company through its career page, setting up informational meetings, volunteering, and online and personal networking. LinkedIn is a great way to find contacts. Glassdoor.com is another great site for researching companies and finding connections.
Apply for the right jobs: Stop applying for jobs you are not qualified for! You are wasting your time as well as the potential employer. Know your skills and experience and only apply for the jobs you can show you are qualified to do successfully.
