Pet Nutrition for the New Year

Between traveling to visit family, entertaining guests at home and indulging at parties it can be hard to maintain a healthy, regular diet during the holidays. This season I found myself more concerned at mealtime due to a furry new family member. Amongst all the excitement and commotion over the holidays my 7 month old puppy had prime access to new treats coming from the hands of friends and family alike. Special treats off of Christmas buffets may be enticing but they can cause harm to the animal’s health. Treats can interrupt a pet’s meal schedule and if not intended for pet consumption can be toxic to the animal. Did you know that the following “people” foods are generally cited as being poisonous to dogs?

  • Avocado
  • Coffee
  • Chocolate
  • Garlic
  • Onions and onion powder
  • Raisins and grapes
  • Xylitol (a sweetener found in many candies and gums)
  • Every pet is different and even some nontoxic foods can cause discomfort in a pet. Whether you have a new pet this year or a longtime companion Richland Library has resources to help you set and maintain nutritional goals for your adored animals.

Note: This is not a complete list of foods poisonous to dogs. Please consult with a veterinarian for full advice on pet nutrition.
