Project Summer Stride: Week Four

Week four occurred close to the July 4th holiday. We had fewer students than normal attend, but the 15 that did attend had a blast! In addition to the normal welcome activities, tutoring time and lunch, the children visited the Children's Room at Richland Library for stories and a puppet show. They enjoyed "The Old Lion and Fox" puppet show and sang along with Ms. Sherry as she read Charlie Parker Played Be-Bop!. They also chose two books to take home; they each now have a "library" of over ten books at home.

Unfortunately, many school children have limited access to nutritious food during the summer months. We noticed that many of the Project Summer Stride students arrived hungry each week and were unable to focus. We decided to offer them a small breakfast at the start of each session from now on. After their breakfast this week, the children were more engaged and responsive during tutoring and seemed to enjoy their day much more.

Each week brings its new challenges and successes, and Project Summer Stride continues to grow and improve. Stay tuned - we have five more weeks of growing to do!

Amazon Says: Ever hear of Charlie Parker? The great jazz saxophone player? If you have or if you haven't, it's okay. Look at this board book and you'll hear Charlie Parker; you'll hear music in your mind. "Be bop. Fisk, fisk. Lollipop. Boomba, boomba." Look. That's Charlie swinging and spinning all over the pages. And that's Charlie's cat, waiting, waiting for him to come home... less...
