Reading Resolutions 2013 image

Reading Resolutions 2013

I’m something of a re-reader. I am more than happy to revisit a story I have thoroughly enjoyed. So, not surprisingly, some of my reading resolutions include re-reading well liked books, but I am trying to add some challenges as well.

My first reading resolution is to read Robert Jordan’s Wheel of Time series in its entirety. The first book in the series Eye of the World was published in 1990 and will conclude in January 2013 with the publication of the fourteenth book in the series, A Memory of Light. Mr. Jordan passed away in 2007 and the last three books of the series were completed by another noted fantasy author, Brandon Sanderson. I read the first four or five books some time ago, but the length of time between books was a little long causing me to move on to other books. However, because the books I did complete were so much fun for me I kept collecting the books knowing I definitely wanted to read the series in its entirety.

My second reading resolution is to re-read The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings trilogy. The Hobbit was the book that made me realize what a grand adventure reading could be and that while high school summer reading is technically homework it can still be fun. I have been meaning to re-read these books for some time but never seemed to get around to them. So, this year I resolve to make time to read these cherished stories. And then maybe have a movie marathon!

My third reading resolution is to read at least twelve nonfiction books, one a month, this year. I often think to myself that I will make time to add more nonfiction to my recreational reading, but I have never really achieved this goal. Luckily, the Vista Book Group gives me the opportunity to read outside my comfort zone so this year the Vista Book Group will be reading the following nonfiction selections: Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a World That Can’t Stop Talking, Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Coast Trail, The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, Let’s Pretend This Never Happened, and Zeitoun. So, I have 5 planned nonfiction reads, I just need to find seven more!

Do you have any reading resolutions? If so, please share them with us.
