What’s Stopping You?

I have a confession, my Pinterest boards are full of project ideas that never came into fruition- they have become a graveyard for recipes, craft ideas and skills that I want to learn but have never gotten around to.  Be honest, when was the last time you tried something new purely out of self-interest?

The great thing about learning in adulthood is that it can take the form of anything that you feel passionate about. Gone are the childhood limitations of being told what you have to study and work towards. So why as adults, with so much freedom to try new skills and expand our horizons do we fail to pursue the things that could potentially make us the most happy? The desire and benefits of learning do not diminish with age, however the barriers to doing so increase exponentially.

The Studios at Richland Library are being developed to break down the barriers of adult hands-on learning. We want to make it easy for you to learn and create by offering our resources:

  • Physical Space

The creative process requires workspace to experiment and get messy. Images of well stocked craft rooms with perfect organization abound on the internet and in magazines but they are a luxury few actually have. In my home, the largest table space is my dining table. The need to have everything cleaned up before dinnertime is enough to prevent me from ever starting a project. That is why we are dedicating physical space in the library for you to create. We are here for you to spread your materials out, have access to good lighting and an inspiring atmosphere whether you require comfort and quiet or energy and activity to produce at your best.

  • Know-How

Are you afraid to start a project for fear it’s out of your league? Have you ever started a task only to get stuck half-way through? I can’t tell you how many times I have wanted to throw my sewing machine out the window after much wasted time spent trouble shooting. Creating does not have to be impeded by fear or frustration when you have a community to support you. While we do embrace mishaps and failed experiments as a part of the creative process you don’t have to go at it alone. The Studio Staff have an expansive knowledge base to help you through your endeavors and we are working to bring in local experts to establish a supportive community of creators.

  • Financial Investment

The cost of technology and creative equipment adds up fast. It can be hard to rationalize purchasing equipment that you have never used before especially if you just want to use it for one project. There have been many times when I wanted to sample a craft to see if it is something that I enjoy before fully committing to buying all of the necessary supplies. Our studios will be equipped with tools for media creation and editing, studio art, crafts, writing and more. By sharing tools, we are eliminating this financial risk so that all community members can engage in creative pursuits.

The Richland Library Friends’ Summer Learning Challenge begins June 1. This summer, whether your creative “to-do” list is jotted down virtually, physically or mentally, I encourage you to check a few goals off. Attend some of our maker classes, check out our craft and hobby book collection, take our online classes and be on the lookout for more to come from the Studios at Main opening soon.
