Today in History with a Twist: October 3, 2013

Happy Thanksgiving!

1863 - President Abraham Lincoln declares that the last Thursday in November will be recognized as Thanksgiving Day along with Thursdays, November 30, 1865 and November 29, 1866. - Wait it isn't even Halloween yet.

It's almost time to change all of your passwords so treat your Techies nice today.  It's Techies Day, this is your chance to give your friendly technician(s) some well deserved appreciation. The office technician may be a geek.  But, when your PC goes down, or gets a virus, that geek is invaluable.  He's on top of his trade, and can get your system back up and running faster than you can say "gigabyte".  Not to be left out..... This day is for all technicians, not just computer techies.  There are many highly skilled technical jobs out there that demand high quality people do to assess equipment of all kinds.  Let's give a big hand and a thanks to all techies, from all fields, on this special day.      1955 - The Mickey Mouse Club debuts on ABC. - O.K. all together now, M...I...C...,

42 BC - Triumvirs Mark Antony and Octavian clash with Caesar's assassins Brutus and Cassius at the First Battle of Philippi.  The assassins actually gain the upper hand in the battle but in the confusion Cassius thought they had lost and commits suicide.  This allows Antony and Octavian to withdraw their armies and regroup.  They would fight again three weeks later and this time Brutus would be defeated.  Referring to this battle, "Complete the battle once begun!" would become a popular saying during Octavian's rule as Emperor. - Good advice, needs to be followed more often.

1964 - First Buffalo Wings are made at the Anchor Bar in Buffalo, New York.  The story is that it was late at night and some of the bar patrons wanted something to eat.  The owner went back into the kitchen and threw together some scraps and brought them out.  They proved to be popular and the rest is history. - I have eaten there, the wings are good but I think Kelly's are better.

1990 - Germany is re-unified when the German Democratic Republic ceases to exist and its territory becomes part of the Federal Republic of Germany.  East German citizens became part of the European Community, which later became the European Union.  The day is now celebrated as German Unity Day. - I was there, went to the former border crossing point near Meiningen the next day.  Went up in an ex East German guard tower and took a sledge hammer to the border fence.  They had a fest tent set up at the check point so we had a few beers with the ex East Germans. - Fun to live history.

1993 - The Battle of Mogadishu, better known as Black Hawk Down.  In an attempt to capture officials of warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid's organisation in Mogadishu, Somalia, a ranger raid turns into a full blown battle.  18 US soldiers and about 1,000 Somalis are killed in heavy fighting. - A friend of mine led the relief force to get the Rangers out.  I just missed it getting there two weeks later. - How did we lose such a lop sided battle?

Today we celebrate the birthdays of:

1720 - Johann Peter Uz - German poet (d. 1796) - Born in Ansbach (they make a great scotch type liquor there).  He studied law in 1739-43 at the university of Halle, where he associated with the poets Johann Gleim and Johann Nikolaus Götz, and in conjunction with the latter translated the odes of Anacreon (1746).  In 1748 Uz was appointed unpaid (!!) secretary to the Justizcollegium, an office he held for twelve years; in 1763 he became assessor to the imperial court of justice at Nuremberg, and in 1790 was made a judge.  A monument to Uz stands in the Ansbach Court Garden. It was near this monument, in 1833, that Kaspar Hauser (weird story here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kaspar_Hauser) was murdered. - They have poets in Germany!?!

1800 - George Bancroft - Historian and politician (d. 1891) - Prominent in promoting secondary education both in his home state and at the national level.  During his tenure as U.S. Secretary of the Navy, he established the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis in 1845.  Among his best-known writings is the magisterial series, History of the United States, from the Discovery of the American Continent. - About time for volume two.

Amazon Says: From a small Iron-Age settlement on the banks of the Tiber, Rome grew to become the centre of an empire that dominated what was then known of the western world. This book recreates the evolution of that city, describing the individuals and events that made Rome a political and cultural conqueror. The book portrays not only the cynosures of the Roman world, but also lesser known figures, reassessing their impact upon both the character of Roman society and the development of the Empire. Rome's artistic achievements, especially in literature, architecture, sculpture and painting, are scrutinized, and the economic and social conditions of life for ordinary people are examined. Finally, the changing relationships between Rome and the peoples of its provinces, and the reasons for the ultimate disintegration, or transformation, of the western empire are closely examined. less...

Amazon Says: William F. Buckley Jr. reflects on the event that marked the fall of Communism in EuropeThe fall of the Berlin Wall in November 1989 was the turning point in the struggle against Communism in Eastern Europe. The culmination of popular uprisings in Hungary, Poland, and East Germany, the Wall's fall led inexorably to revolutions in Czechoslovakia and Romania, the reunification of Germany, and, ultimately, the disintegration of the Soviet Union itself. In this book, American conservative pioneer and National Review founder William F. Buckley Jr. explains how and why the Cold War ended as it did-and what lessons we can draw from the experience. Writing with his legendary wit and insight, he brings to life Communism's last gasp, showing how Reagan's hard-nosed foreign policy and Gorbachev's reforms undermined Warsaw Pact dictators, emboldened dissidents, and finally made the dream of freedom a reality in Eastern Europe.Written by one of America's most erudite and influential political thinkers and writer.Includes a new foreword by Henry Kissinger marking the 20th anniversary of the opening of the Berlin WallHailed as "eloquent [and] immensely readable" (Baltimore Sun), this account "celebrates the tenacity of the human spirit and the will to achieve freedom" (Publishers Weekly).Sure to delight conservatives, annoy liberals, and enlighten everyone who reads it, The Fall of the Berlin Wall is William F. Buckley Jr. at his inimitable best. less...

Amazon Says: Black Hawk Down drops you into a crowded marketplace in the heart of Mogadishu, Somalia with the U.S. Special Forces - and puts you in the middle of the most intense firefight American soldiers have fought since the Vietnam War. Late in the afternoon of Sunday, October 3, 1993, the soldiers of Task Force Ranger were sent on a mission to capture two top lieutenants of a renegade warlord and return to base. It was supposed to take them about an hour. Instead, they were pinned down through a long and terrible night in a hostile city, locked in a desperate struggle to kill or be killed. When the unit was finally rescued the following morning, eighteen American soldiers were dead and dozens more badly injured. The Somali toll was far worse: more than five hundred killed and over a thousand wounded. Mark Bowden's dramatic narrative captures this harrowing ordeal through the eyes of the young men who fought that day. He draws on his extensive interviews of participants from both sides - as well as classified combat video and radio transcripts - to bring their stories to life. A Black Hawk pilot is shot down and besieged by an angry mob, then saved by Somalis who plan to ransom him to the local warlord. A medic desperately tries to keep his grievously wounded friend alive long enough to be evacuated - only to have him bleed to death in his arms. The company clerk, who is the butt of jokes in the barracks, rises to the task and performs extraordinary feats of valor. less...

Amazon Says: This collection moves from medieval lyrics and ballads to the Protestant hymns of the 16th century, to the great explosion of German literature with Goethe and Schiller, taking in the isolated genius of Hoelderin, and then on to late 19th-century naturalism, the post-World War I expressionists, and several notable poets in this century, including Loerke and Bertolt Brecht. Demonstrating the unusual and exciting way German poetry has evolved, this volume of poems illustrates how, at times, traditions seem to have been lost and then re-created, while many of the poets included here - Weckherlin, Opitz, Klopstock, Goethe, Hoelderin, Rilke, Trakl - seem to start afresh in a way no English poet has done since Chaucer. less...
