When will you receive health insurance coverage?

December 23, 2013 was the deadline to enroll in a health insurance plan on healthcare.gov and receive coverage starting January 1, 2014.

“Couldn’t enroll by December 23?

If you weren’t able to enroll in an insurance plan by December 23 because of problems you had using HealthCare.gov, you still may be able to get coverage that starts January 1. Contact the Marketplace Call Center at 1-800-318-2596… The representatives will ask for information about your situation and explain your options. These may include starting a new application over the phone to get coverage effective on January 1.” (from healthcare.gov)

If you still need time to look at all of your options, you have until March 31, 2014 to make your final decision and your first month’s premium payment.

The date your health insurance coverage begins, depends solely on the date you make your first premium payment to your new health insurance company. See the chart below to find out when you can expect to receive health insurance coverage:

*If you enroll in a health insurance plan through the Marketplace by March 31, 2014, you will not be charged the individual shared responsibility payment (which is $95 per adult or 1% of your income, whichever is higher) for any month before your coverage began. In other words, even though your coverage won’t begin until the 5th month of the year, you will not be charged the penalty as long as you enroll in Marketplace coverage by the 31st of March and maintain coverage for the rest of the year.

If you purchase your insurance coverage outside of the Marketplace, please contact your health insurance company for your coverage effective date.
