Early Literacy Challenge: Counting
Challenge yourself to read, sing, talk, play and write with your child in new ways this week!
Read: Share counting stories over and over. Give your child time to look at, point to and count the objects in the books.
Sing: Use songs that involve counting -- Once I Caught a Fish Alive and Five Little Monkeys.
Talk: Ask questions and use toys to grow math skills. What color blocks do you see? How many red blocks are there?
Play: Add counting into play. Count how many ingredients go in the pot while pretending to cook. Do a countdown before you race cars. Count how many blocks can be stacked before they fall.
Write: Have your child draw ten rabbits -- or ten of anything! Label the drawings with the word for each number and the numerical symbol.
Share numbers every day in different ways to help children grasp the complex concept of measurement over time. It's never too early to start!
