Amazon Says: A classic tale of love and acceptance from the Brothers Grimm is beautifully rendered in this magical retelling. Hans is an unusual boy. Born a hedgehog from the waist up, he knows what it’s like to truly be an outcast. Even his amazing fiddle playing can’t help him fit in. So Hans flees to the forest with his herd of loyal pigs and only his music to keep him company. But then a most unusual thing happens: When Hans crosses paths with two kings with two lovely daughters, his luck starts to change. Will this lonely soul find true love after all? This lively and lyrical retelling of the classic Grimm’s tale, paired with lush, detailed illustrations, reminds us of the power of music, the importance of belonging, and the transformative effect of love. less...

Amazon Says: On September 28, 1983, the discovery of a previously unknown tale by Wilhelm Grimm was reported on the front page of The New York Times. "After more than 150 years," the Times noted, "Hansel and Gretel, Snow-White, Rumpelstiltskin, and Cinderella will be joined by another Grimm fairy-tale character." The story of dear Mili was preserved in a letter Wilhelm Grimm wrote to a little girl in 1816, a letter that remained in her family's possession for over a century and a half. It tells of a mother who sends her daughter into the forest to save her from a terrible war. The child comes upon the hut of an old man, who gives her shelter, and she repays his kindness by serving him faithfully for what she thinks are three days. Actually, thirty years have passed, but Mili has remained safe, and with the old man's blessing there is still time for a tender reunion with her mother. As for the pictures that interpret Dear Mili--hailed by School Library Journal as "gorgeous"--they were a milestone in Maurice Sendak's career, the work of a master at the height of his powers. less...

Amazon Says: Matt Tavares’s luminous illustrations and Stephen Mitchell’s wry text transform this classic Grimms’ fairy tale into a splendid edition to treasure. "Deep in a forsaken wood, a wild man keeps watch over a golden spring." Iron Hans is nine feet tall and as brown as rust, with hair to his knees. He is cursed, a terror to all, until a young prince finds the courage to befriend him. But when the boy betrays Iron Hans’s trust, he must make his way in the world alone, penniless and unknown — save for a little help from a certain forgiving wild man. Stephen Mitchell’s deft retelling and Matt Tavares’s elegant illustrations gracefully render this timeless Grimms’ tale about pride and humility, wealth and poverty, and the importance of doing good, whether servant or prince, wild man or king. less...

Amazon Says: How clever are you? And how sharp-sighted? Are you as clever as Doctor All-Knowing -- keen to change his sad life (and feed his poor daughter, Maggie)? Are you, like Doctor All-Knowing, sharp-eyed enough to search out the thieves who've been stealing a rich man's money from right under his nose? Good! You are just the one to watch Maggie as she cleverly, sharp-sightedly helps her father earn a four-course reward. The Brothers Grimm rarely told so dross a tale as this little-known one, briskly retold here by Doris Orgel and animated to perfection by Alexandra Boiger. less...
