Start Saving, Henry!

How do you help your children make sense of dollars and cents? Sharing stories like Start Saving, Henry! by Nancy Carlson is a perfect way to start the conversation.

Great Read Aloud for Ages 5-8

Henry is your typical seven year-old mouse. He does chores around the house like making the bed and setting the table. He even earns an allowance. Unfortunately, Henry can’t wait to spend what he’s earned. That is, until he sees Super Robot Dude. When Henry asks his mom to buy it, she tells him that he will have to save his allowance and buy it himself. So, he starts to save his money which isn’t easy. His dad points out that saving for the Super Robot Dude means not spending his money on other things “even if you really want it.” He learns to make good choices, faces temptation (a giant tube of bubble gum) and realistically, he runs into trouble. He has to pay for a lost library book. Then he has to work to grow his money all over again. There’s plenty of kid power in Henry’s story as he works to build up his savings on his own. There’s also opportunities to talk to your children about what Henry’s doing and how he’s feeling as you read. Many children will relate to Henry's frustration when he says, “I’ll never save enough for Super Robot Dude!” Luckily, he prevails and helps readers understand the power of saving and of giving.
