Working Tech: 5 Apps to Keep You Organized

1: Kanban Flow - This organizational tool allows the user to plan out their tasks for the day in a series of columns - To-do, Do today, In Progress, and Done. With color coordinating tasks, drag and drop functionality, and a simple layout, this web-based program is great for planning your work day.

2. Pomodoro Timers - My personal favorite of the many timer apps available on the web and mobile is the 30/30 app (only available for iPhone at the time of this writing.) With its minimalist design, this simple app keeps the user on task by counting down to the next job with a colorful and attractive interface. You can manually set work sessions of any length up to 30 minutes, interspersed with breaks between - I recommend 20 minute work periods followed by 5 minute breaks for optimum productivity. There is currently no web-version of 30/30, so if you are looking for a similar program to use on your Windows or Apple computer - try Focus Booster. This free program uses the same pomodoro technique of brief work sessions followed by short breaks to keep you on task.

3: Scrivener - This program is a must have for writers of long works such as novels or dissertations.

4: Evernote - This app is great for short notes and list making, as well as writing on the go. The web-based version instantly saves your document to the online server.

5: Pinterest - A great social network for visual organization. The user can choose to share their "boards" with friends or the public, or they can choose to keep boards private - for their own personal organization. The site features a well-designed mobile app version for visual inspiration and organization on the go.

Amazon Says: Machines need to be productive. People need to be effective. Productivity books focus on doing more, Jim and Tonianne want you to focus on doing better. Personal Kanban is about choosing the right work at the right time. Recognizing why we do the things we do. Understanding the impact of our actions. Creating value - not just product. For ourselves, our families, our friends, our co-workers. For our legacy. Personal Kanban takes the same Lean principles from manufacturing that led the Japanese auto industry to become a global leader in quality, and applies them to individual and team work. Personal Kanban asks only that we visualize our work and limit our work-in-progress. Visualizing work allows us to transform our conceptual and threatening workload into an actionable, context-sensitive flow. Limiting our work-in-progress helps us complete what we start and understand the value of our choices. Combined, these two simple acts encourage us to improve the way we work and the way we make choices to balance our personal, professional, and social lives. Neither a prescription nor a plan, Personal Kanban provides a light, actionable, achievable framework for understanding our work and its context. This book describes why students, parents, business leaders, major corporations, and world governments all see immediate results with Personal Kanban. less...
