The Ladies of Country Music

At Richland Library we strive to offer quality and entertaining collections and events. We are lucky that our community partners also aim to provide such entertainment. If you are a music lover, do not miss The Ladies of Country Music at Trustus Theater on September 6. Local musicians will perform hits from some of the greats - such as Loretta Lynn, Patsy Cline, and Kitty Wells. There are two shows on September 6th - 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. Both shows benefit and promote the 2nd annual Jam Room Music Festival that will be held on Saturday, September 21st. Mark your calendar to see some great national and regional acts right here on Columbia's Main Street.

Before heading down to Trustus, make sure you check out some of Richland Library's music resources. Loretta, Patsy and Kitty are also available as FREE downloads from Freegal. Even if you can't make the show, you can enjoy music from these artists for free with your Richland Library card .

Amazon Says: These 25 classics form a sort of primer in the art of the Nashville turnaround, a country music staple in which the storyline is capped with a climactic twist, which serves to reshuffle everything leading up to it. When it's done right, the turnaround delivers the payoff with the concision of poetry and the perfect symmetry of algebra, and Lynn's own songs are designed as meticulously as the cover tunes, written by Nashville's canniest songsmiths. Loretta may have gotten a late start on her musical career, but she's spent close to a half century making up for it, as these 25 intimate slices of 20th Century American life so sublimely demonstrate. Amazon Says: One of the most beloved country music stars of all time gives us the first collection of her lyrics and, in her own words, tells the stories that inspired her most popular songs, such as "Coal Miner's Daughter," "Don't Come Home A' Drinkin'," and, of course, "I'm a Honky Tonk Girl." Loretta Lynn's rags-to-riches story--from her hardscrabble childhood in Butcher Holler, Kentucky, through her marriage to Oliver "Doolittle" Lynn when she was thirteen, to her dramatic rise to the top of the charts--has resonated with countless fans throughout her more than fifty-year career. Now, the anecdotes she shares here give us deeper insight into her life, her collaborations, her influences, and how she pushed the boundaries of country music by discussing issues important to working-class women, even when they were considered taboo. Readers will also get a rare look at the singer's handwritten lyrics and at personal photographs from her childhood, of her family, and of her performing life. Honky Tonk Girl: A Life in Lyrics is one more way for Lynn's fans--those who already love her and those who soon will--to know the heart and mind of this remarkable woman. less...

Amazon Says: The first full-scale biography of the enduring first lady of country music The twentieth century had three great female singers who plumbed the darkest corners of their hearts and transformed private grief into public dramas. In opera, there was the unsurpassed Maria Callas. In jazz, the tormented Billie Holiday. And in country music, there was Tammy Wynette. "Stand by Your Man," "D-I-V-O-R-C-E," "Take Me to Your World" are but a few highlights of Tammy's staggering musical legacy, all sung with a voice that became the touchtone for women's vulnerability, disillusionment, strength, and endurance. In Tammy Wynette, bestselling biographer Jimmy McDonough tells the story of the small-town girl who grew up to be the woman behind the microphone, whose meteoric rise led to a decades-long career full of tragedy and triumph. Through a high-profile marriage and divorce, her dreadful battle with addiction and illness, and the struggle to compete in a rapidly evolving Nashville, Tammy turned a brave smile toward the world and churned out masterful hit songs though her life resembled the most heartbreaking among them. Tammy Wynette is an intimate portrait of a music icon, the Queen of Heartbreak, whose powerful voice simultaneously evoked universal pain and longing even as it belied her own. less...
