Pigskin Poets is part of Richland Library's annual Summer Reading Challenge. The event brings the University of South Carolina's Gamecock players, decked out in their official jerseys, and Cocky to the library to read books, sing songs, play interactive games and sign autographs to hundreds of children. The goal is to encourage the children to continue reading over the summer.
Excited fans experience the library's simulated stadium in the library’s Bostick auditorium. It is complete with a field, banners and cheerleaders. And, just like the real USC's William Brice Stadium, the Gamecocks and Cocky rush onto the field to the musical sounds of 2001 and the supportive cheers of adoring fans.
The event draws hundreds of adoring Gamecock football fans every year. The partnership with USC encourages reading as Gamecock players model reading and children have one-on-one interaction with college athletes. Children get the message that reading is fun and cool as well as the smart thing to do.
