Gun Laws and Persons with Mental Illness
June 10 , 2013 by Michelle DuPreNever has this topic been in the news so much. On Friday, June 7th, John Zawahri, 23, went on a shooting rampage killing five starting with two members of his own family and three more near or on the campus of Santa Monica College. Zawahri's life was taken in the end by police. It was reported that he may have suffered mental health issues and was even hospitalized. This is only the most recent of many similar tragic events. So this raises the question, should those with mental illness who have been involuntarily committed to a mental institution have their names reported to the National Instant Background Check System for the sole purpose of buying a gun? It's a hot topic and Governor Haley has recently signed a law that does just this as have the majority of other states.

How to Find Employment by Using Side Doors! Researching and Marketing yourself to Companies
June 4 , 2013 by Iris AbneyOne of the most effective job search strategies you can implement is to research companies or organizations that you would like to work for and then introduce yourself to the decision makers. Yes, this does require effort and creativity, but it sure beats getting the all too often silent treatment after you have applied for a position online! It is a pro-active approach to targeting you, the product, to the customer, the employer.
Vista Book Group – The Dog Stars
May 23 , 2013 by Chantal WilsonThe Vista Book Group met in May to discuss The Dog Stars by Peter Heller. An award winning adventure writer and author of several nonfiction books this is Heller’s first work of fiction. The Dog Stars is a novel about a pilot living in a harsh post-apocalyptic world but there still a sense of beauty and tenderness that underlays the bleakness.
Vista Book Group – Gone Girl
May 17 , 2013 by Chantal WilsonThe Vista Book Group met in April to discuss Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. This book was crazy good, emphasis on crazy…and good! Flynn does an exemplary job of setting a disturbing tone and an uncomfortable environment. There is a kind of sinister vibe throughout the story which is told in three parts: Boy Loses Girl, Boy Meets Girl, and Boy Gets Girl Back (Or Vice Versa).
A Glimpse of India
May 23 , 2013 by Mona VermaWe had a great turnout at the Glimpse of India program held at Richland Library ( Bostick Auditorium) on Sunday May 5 from 3:30 p.m.-5:00 p.m. One hundred and forty or more people attended and enjoyed Indian snacks, display of Indian arts and artifacts, display of Indian fiction and nonfiction books, an entertaining show comprising of colorful and classical Indian dance performances and henna tattoo stalls. The children really enjoyed getting henna tattoos ranging from a simple soccer ball or flower to more intricate and artistic henna creations. Henna comes from a plant and is used as a dye for tattoos which fade away in a week or two. Traditionally, they are part of festivals and celebrations as they add beauty and bring good luck. Some attendees participated in the interactive bhangra (Indian folk dance) experience and learned how to perform these high energy dance steps. Pictures of this event are at the Richland library’s facebook page.
