Boredom Busters: 5 Hobbies to Try This Summer

Not so long ago, I had a conversation with my older sister about her daughter and all the stuff she's been up to. I was so excited to hear that she's in a program to learn the basics of basketball. (I can't wait to take her to see the Gamecocks play!) She's also taking gymnastics and learning lots of new, exciting stuff in preschool.

As we were talking, it occurred to me that as an adult, I rarely have new, exciting stuff to talk about. I work, I'm a graduate student, I spend time with my friends, and occasionally I have a trip planned. But, for the most part, when I talk to other members of my family, we talk about the humdrum, everyday stuff.

I'd like to change that. So, I've made myself a promise to do things that I find interesting and challenging. Although I can't throw learning a new language or picking up another instrument into my current mix, I can dedicate an afternoon to trying a new hobby. So, what's on my list? Astronomy, kayaking, and expanding my photography skills. I also wanted to find new ways to bond with my brother and my sweetie, so I added fly-fishing and homebrewing.

So, what about you? How do you beat humdrum?
