Five Great Batgirl Stories

Barbara Gordon, the original Batgirl and superhero librarian, is an optimistic shock of red hair in a Gotham City fraught with darkness and machismo. Let’s take a look at some of her best appearances available for checkout, shall we?

Batman 66 – Yvonne Craig, the actress who played Barbara Gordon on the live action Batman show in the 60s, allowed DC Comics to use her likeness in the more recent Batman 66 comic book series, which tells stories from that time period. Books one and three of the series feature Batgirl stories, with her chasing down Catwoman in the middle of a burglary and facing down Bookworm as he attempts to cast magic spells from a book in the Gotham Public Library.

Batgirl of Burnside – On the other side of the generational divide is the newer, more cosplay-friendly Barbara Gordon of 2014 to today, who starts over from scratch after a fire destroys all her crime fighting equipment. While pursuing her Ph.D., she takes on malicious social media magnates and copycat posers. The art, done by South Carolina’s own Babs Tarr, is a revolution compared to DC’s house style, and will likely inspire copycats as well.

Batgirl Year One – Comics lists tend to heap plenty of praise on Frank Miller’s Batman: Year One, but Scott Beatty and Chuck Dixon scripted a heck of a first year for Barbara, too. Here, Barbara is still asserting her identity as Batgirl, even against a Batman who doesn’t approve of her co-opting his image. Her retort that nobody gave Batman permission to be a vigilante is as confident and clear as the artwork by Marcos Martin.

Folie a Deux – Included in Batgirl: The Greatest Stories Ever Told, this two-parter is head-and-shoulders above everything else in the book. The action lies in a bank robbery, but the central story plays off the tension between Barbara Gordon as Batgirl and James Gordon as her father and police commissioner. They pretend not to know each other even as they are distracted by the need to protect one another.

Shadow of the Bat – This one is an animated entry, but don’t underestimate it: Shadow of the Bat is one of the most distinct portrayals Barbara’s ever had, and one of the strongest stories in all of Batman: The Animated Series. It’s a complete package of Batgirl 101, including defying a curmudgeonly Batman’s orders, defending James Gordon’s honor while he awaits trial, friendly rivalry with Robin, and a clear-eyed assertiveness that no man, whether well-intentioned or villainous, can damper.

Bonus! - Mike Maihack's webcomics featuring Batgirl and Supergirl as a costumed Odd Couple is too fun for words, click it and know joy.
