Five Great X-Men Storylines

The latest X-Men movie, "Days of Future Past," is out this weekend. Columbia's theaters have gotten really convenient about early releases, meaning I have seen it, and enjoyed it more than any of the earlier movies in the series. What makes this release unique is how it merges two different casts from their own X-Men movies (which have now been produced 14 years apart) to tell a story that spans decades and a lot of A-list acting talent.

What makes that comparison amusing is the fact that X-Men comics have been playing with time travel and their own continuity for a while. For example, the current series, All-New X-Men, has the X-Men of the classic 1960s series visiting the present.

Anyone looking for the inspiration behind Days of Future Past need only check out the X-Men story of the same name.

If you want a serious morality tale that examines the prejudice and other-ness experienced by the X-Men, try out God Loves, Man Kills.

Grant Morrison's shot at the series, New X-Men, introduces several new mutants and develops several of the team's personalities into new territory. For example, Scott "Cyclops" Summers shows some progress in getting over Jean Grey's death.

If you want the X-Men characters saying witty things like in the Avengers movie, then Joss Whedon's Astonishing X-Men will scratch that itch.

And, as a bonus, that time the supervillain Proteus messed with the X-Men's senses and Cyclops showed true leadership by beating up his own teammates to clear their heads. It includes bonus art from a surreal take on what Wolverine perceives when his senses are sabotaged.

Richland Library has multitudes more X-Men comics and movies for checkout.
