The appointment on 10 December of Mary T. Barra as CEO of General Motors is being hailed as a breakthrough. A female executive will now head one of the Big Three U.S. automakers, long a male-dominated industry. Meanwhile, the anticipated nominee for the top of the 2016 Democratic presidential ticket is former senator and secretary of state Hillary Rodham Clinton. Do these developments herald the end of the “glass ceiling” that has kept women from the top echelons of business and government? Much has been written on this subject in recent years.
