A Honey of a Hobby

How would you like to have your own supply of honey and improve your own and your neighbors’ gardens into the bargain? Urban (not to mention suburban) beekeeping is surging in popularity, and with good reason.

Most store-bought honey is blended from many sources and tends toward the characterless, whereas fresh honey from a single source has a more distinctive flavor (determined by the types of flowering plants visited by the bees). Some people tout the health benefits of bee pollen, although there is no scientific evidence for this. Best of all, bees make pollination happen, so in keeping bees you will be contributing to the future plant life in your area.

According to a recent article in The State (11/22/15), Midlands counties and municipalities are still in the process of sorting out how to regulate backyard beekeeping. But in the meantime, if you’re interested in learning more about this rewarding hobby, check out these useful titles from Richland Library’s collection.

Amazon Says: Taken from his popular blog, the Surrey Beekeeper, James Dearsley presents the first personal, accessible account of the experience of learning how to harvest beesBeekeeping . . . oh my . . . what have I done? I am 30 years old, I have been married for three years and am a new father to a fantastic little boy. Surely there are things that I should be doing at this age which do not involve little yellow and black insects that can hurt you if you are remotely clumsy (which at 6ft 5, I have an amazing ability to be). James Dearsley's wife thought he had lost his mind when he announced his intention to become a beekeeper. But like many interested in the self-sufficient lifestyle, he loved gardening and growing vegetables in his garden and the old romantic in him had idealistic notions of teaching his little boy where honey came from, so he set himself what seemed a reasonable goal: to get, in a year's time, just one jar of honey. less...

Amazon Says: In recent years beekeepers have had to face tremendous challenges, from pests such as varroa and tracheal mites and from the mysterious but even more devastating phenomenon known as Colony Collapse Disorder (CCD). Yet in backyards and on rooftops all over the world, bees are being raised successfully, even without antibiotics, miticides, or other chemical inputs.More and more organically minded beekeepers are now using top-bar hives, in which the shape of the interior resembles a hollow log. Long lasting and completely biodegradable, a topbar hive made of untreated wood allows bees to build comb naturally rather than simply filling prefabricated foundation frames in a typical box hive with added supers. Top-bar hives yield slightly less honey but produce more beeswax than a typical Langstroth box hive. Regular hive inspection and the removal of old combs helps to keep bees healthier and naturally disease-free. Top-Bar Beekeeping provides complete information on hive management and other aspects of using these innovative hives. All home and hobbyist beekeepers who have the time and interest in keeping bees intensively should consider the natural, low-stress methods outlined in this book. It will also appeal to home orchardists, gardeners, and permaculture practitioners who look to bees for pollination as well as honey or beeswax. less...
