Green Lanterns of Earth

Green Lantern's Light, On Film & In Print

Richland Library Main is hosting a Green Lantern movie screening August 17 at 2:00, and in case you're curious about the comics, here's a brief recommendation list to follow the emerald warrior's recent adventures in print. Their larger arcs/themes are as follows:

Rebirth - Geoff Johns is the writer largely responsible for reigniting DC's investment in Green Lantern, giving the Corps and its many cosmic characters one blockbuster event after another and contributing the emotional spectrum of colors to fill out the universe. Some of the ideas fleshed out during Johns's reign come from brief references from Alan Moore's Green Lantern comic, which I recommend if you want to see Johns's inspiration for a decade's worth of comics.

Sinestro Corps War - A sci-fi epic that cements Sinestro's place among modern DC villains and gives two color-coded armies plenty of reason to fire beams at each other.

War of the Green Lanterns - As representations of willpower and order in the universe, the Green Lanterns often overextend their authority and become the universe's biggest enemy. These breaches of goodwill are usually at the hands of the Lanterns' bosses, the Guardians of the Universe (not to be confused with Guardians of the Galaxy, of course). In older comics, Green Lantern and Green Arrow are hard-fought allies, working together even as their personal politics clash, with Hal Jordan the "fascist" and Oliver Queen the "hippie."

Blackest Night - Green (Willpower), Yellow (Fear), Red (Anger), Blue (Hope), Sapphire (Love), Orange (Avarice)... what about Black? Blackest Night is the prophecy that all of the lanterns would go out during the rise of the deadliest one (Death), which leads to a crossover throughout the DC universe as fallen characters come back to life to prey on the closest people from their former lives.

Brightest Day - Green, Yellow, Red, Blue, Sapphire, Orange, Black... what about White? Brightest Day is the latter, more life-affirming portion of the prophecy, in which another lantern rises (Life) to counter the effects of a corps powered by death. Again, a massive crossover occurs as DC characters are brought back to life, but for a mysterious purpose they cannot seem to solve.

New 52 and beyond - When DC rebooted its universe in 2011, the Green Lantern series seemed only slightly changed. All of the major events leading to the New 52 basically defined the Green Lantern series for a new audience, so most of the continuity carried over without much change. In addition to the eponymous New 52 Green Lantern series are New Guardians, Green Lantern Corps, and Red Lanterns. Each series focuses on a different Earth Lantern, including the introduction of a new Green Lantern, Simon Baz, a Lebanese-American Muslim from Detroit. Each of these series has been out for several volumes' worth of comics, so there is no shortage of material to read if you want to journey to the stars and the rainbow guard of emotion enthusiasts that police them.

Amazon Says: The sold out 6-issue miniseries event of 2004-2005 — written by Geoff Johns (BLACKEST NIGHT, TEEN TITANS) with art by Ethan Van Sciver and Prentis Rollins — is available in this new edition, complete with the preview story from Wizard Magazine as well as a number of extras previously only available in ABSOLUTE GREEN LANTERN: REBIRTH! Hal Jordan was considered the greatest Green Lantern of them all. But Jordan lost control, allowed himself to be corrupted and transformed into the villainous Parallax. Later, Jordan reappeared and made the ultimate sacrifice — a sacrifice that allowed him to become the Spectre, the Wrath of God. See how a man born without fear and seeking to rebuild his life, puts cosmic forces into motion that will have repercussions not only on Earth but across the universe.
