Amazon Says: 2009 release, the vocalist's debut album from the Verve Records label. Known worldwide for her ability to connect modern sounds with the heart and soul of Brazilian music, the New York-born Gilberto focuses on the rhythms of her native country, devising a cosmopolitan yet classic sound with the help of a diverse group of collaborators, including Carlinhos Brown (Caetano Veloso), Didi Gutman (Brazilian Girls), Mark Ronson (Amy Winehouse), Daniel Jobim (grandson of Antonio Carlos Jobim) and John King (the Dust Brothers). All In One perfectly expresses Gilberto's interest in making music that feels romantic and fluid. In particular, Most of the record is sung in Portuguese, Bebel's native language, and was conceived, developed and recorded in her home studio. less...

Amazon Says: Amy Grant the music tells her story. She has been making records since she was a teenager and if you ask her what's been the most meaningful memories along the way, it wouldn't be the 30 million records sold, the number one radio songs, the number one albums, or the touring...it would be the people and lives she's encountered along the way. This new addition to the Icon series focuses on her pop years and features 11 songs, including the hits, 'Baby, Baby,' 'Takes A Little Time,' and 'I Will Remember You.' About Amy Grant Nearly 30 years ago Amy Grant began embracing fans with a heartfelt singer-songwriter style mixing elements of pop, folk and country. Contemporary Christian music's first major crossover success, she has to date earned three multiplatinum albums, six other platinum albums and four more gold albums; scored 10 Top 40 pop singles and 17 Top 40 Adult Contemporary tracks as well as a string of Contemporary Christian chart-toppers, and won six Grammy Awards plus numerous Dove Awards less...

Amazon Says: Ancient Future is the second collaboration between visionary pianist RYUICHI SAKAMOTO and electronic pioneer CHRISTOPHER WILLITS. Built around a series of piano pieces that Sakamoto sent to Willits after the release of the duo's first record together, 2008's Ocean Fire, the six tracks that make up Ancient Future are entirely instrumental and yet, they speak about the very essence of what it means to be human. As a whole, Ancient Future functions as a piece about the creation, acceptance and completion of one's fate and all of life's experiences, following a trajectory through inner conflict, resolution and, ultimately, acceptance. The six-song cycle moves through a narrative of sorts, each piece with a story to tell and an aspect of life to explore. The album opens with the restless energy of "Reticent Reminiscence", an energy that subsides into the introversion of "Abandoned Silence" and "I Don't Want to Understand" and, eventually, the cold disassociation of "Levitation". A certain warmth returns with "Releasing", its guitar arpeggios like washes of sunlight, and the album's journey finally resolves into closing track "Completion", a piece that's full of quietly melancholy tranquility, perhaps reflecting the experience of finally coming to know oneself. Despite its conceptual coherency, contradictions lie at the heart of Ancient Future, as the album title might suggest. Even within the confines of each track, opposing forces are at play loops of static and feedback provide the backing for delicate melodies that develop and evolve like ripples on a placid lake. And yet the contradictions never feel like conflicts instead, the diverging elements come together to create something with its own internal logic, perhaps reflecting the way that we are all the sum of our experiences, both light and dark, positive and negative. less...

Amazon Says: There are several themes in the score of Anna Karenina:sometimes appearing alone, often intersecting, their paths running alongside for a while. Those paths are shared by the characters in the story as they walk towards or away from convention, pretence, happiness, guilt, love, fun, and even truth. In a very important sense, the musical motifs do not represent the characters themselves I prefer to think of them as spirits, perhaps demons, unseen, signposting the way, or simply bearing witness to the events. Most of the action, in our version of Tolstoys novel, takes place in an abandoned theatre, upon or around a stage a symbol of the make-believe life of the Russian aristocracy at the end of the 19th century. Having convention and pretence confined within the boundaries of an old theatre, hints of course to another life, one that must exist somewhere outside the confines of that stage. The music of Anna Karenina is perched between those two worlds. For the curious: track 8: Beroza (Birch) is a very old Russian folk song: of its many versions, the one I used talks of a young woman deceiving an older husband. for track 19 At the Opera I used Tolstoy s own words from Anna Karenina, Part II, Chapter XI Dario Marianelli - 13th August 2012 less...

Amazon Says: Since his first offerings began making the Internet rounds in 2009, Toro Y Moi s Chaz Bundick has proven himself to be not just a prolific musician, but a diverse one as well, letting each successive release broaden the scope of his oeuvre. The funky psych-pop of 2011 s Underneath the Pine evinced an artist who could create similar atmospheres even without the aid of source material and drum machines. His Freaking Out EP, a handful of singles and remixes, and a retrospective box-set plot points all along the producer-songwriter spectrum in which he s worked since his debut, and his third full-length, Anything In Return, sees him poised directly in the middle of the two. The product of a move to Berkeley, CA and the subsequent extended separation from loved ones, Anything in Return shows a pervasive sense of peace with Bundick s tendency to dabble in both sides of the modern music making spectrum, and he sounds comfortable engaging in intuitive pop production, putting forth the impression of unmediated id. The producer s hand is prominent not least in the sampled "yeah"s and "uh"s that give the album a hip-hop-indebted confidence and many of the songs feature the 4/4 beats and deftly employed effects usually associated with house music. Tracks like "High Living" and "Day One" show a considerably Californian influence, their languid funk redolent of a decidedly West Coast temperament, and elsewhere not least on lead single, "So Many Details" the record plays with darker atmospheres than we re used to hearing from Toro Y Moi. Sounding quite assured in what some may call this songwriter s return to producer-hood, Anything in Return is Bundick uninhibited by issues of genre, an album that feels like the artist s essence. less...

Amazon Says: Before her untimely death at the age of 54, Teena Marie, known as the Ivory Queen of Soul or simply Lady Tee and as one of the only white artists ever signed to Motown Records, was working on her 14th and latest album, Beautiful. Recorded at her home studio and finished except for final mixes, Beautiful was seen through to its conclusion by Teena's 20-year-old daughter Alia Rose, who sings with her Mom on two tracks, a cover of Curtis Mayfield's "Give Me Your Love" and "Rare Breed," which she co-wrote (Alia co-wrote two more songs on the album, "Sweet Tooth" and the title song). The first single, "Luv Letter," is an homage to Teena's Motown roots, with nods to Stevie Wonder's "Signed, Sealed, Delivered I'm Yours," and a dedication to Alia's father, who just happened to be a postman, like in the Marvelettes' song of the same name. Beautiful is a mother's gift to her daughter, who returns the gesture the only way she knows how, by completing it. The end result is a true labor of lov less...

Amazon Says: Some have pronounced the smooth/contemporary jazz genre DOA after taking some severe body blows over the last few years, but it has simply been in the process of a youth takeover. Having taken notice of the deliberate dumbing down and purification of the music, the younger generation has chosen to embrace the genre, redirect and firmly grab hold of the torch and carry it boldly into the new millennium. Bassist Julian Vaughn is one who has extended his hand, grabbed hold, lit the flame and is off and running with this highly infectious collection of sides that as the title suggests is ready to blow down the affore-set and established boundaries and bring again blood flow to this re-emergent genre. 'Breakthrough' is brought to life through the hands of one of the formats pre-eminent and skilled producers Darren Rahn whose brilliant touch has resulted in chart topping Billboard hits for the likes of Dave Koz, Eric Darius and the late and beloved Wayman Tisdale. Playing lead bass makes it all but inevitable that comparisons be made to Tisdale, an artist that through his music confirmed to Vaughn that this was the path that he wanted to follow, but that's where the comparisons end. Vaughn has folded the influences of Tisdale, Stanley Clark and others in to his own unique thumping, ground pounding, soul laced signature that will send a strong signal to the world that he has arrived. The format classic in waiting 'On Your Feet' will do as the title suggests, get you up and moving and with titles like 'Jubilant', 'No Matter' and the title track, Vaughn is prepped to usher in a new attitude, vibrancy and positivity that is sure to pump some much needed life into the contemporary jazz blood and lead the youth brigade as it molds the shape and sound of the next evolution. less...

Amazon Says: Ben Harper has teamed with renowned harmonica master Charlie Musselwhite to create Get Up!, a piercing song-cycle of struggle and heart, slated for release by Stax Records/Concord Music Group on January 29th, 2013. Recorded in Los Angeles and produced by Harper, Get Up!, is his 12th studio album and first new recording since 2011's Give Till It's Gone (Virgin). A striking mix of blues, gospel, roots and R&B, Get Up! features ten vivid musical character studies, skillfully rendered in cinematic detail, all written or co-written by Harper. Charlie Musselwhite s searing point/counter-point harmonica accentuates Harper s vocals throughout Get Up!, tying its songs together into a cohesive musical whole. The band, including Jason Mozersky, guitar; Jesse Ingalls, bass; Jordan Richardson, drums; along with Ben Harper on vocals, guitar and slide guitar; plays with economical grit, lending the songs true understanding and authority. In 1994, Ben Harper released his first record Welcome to the Cruel World, marking his arrival as singer and songwriter of substance and ambition. Amazon Says: 20 Years of Conversations How do you commemorate the 20-year career of Tori Amos, an artist who has sold over 12 million albums, played well over 1,000 shows, won numerous awards and, more importantly, touched, healed or changed the lives of millions of fans? For a composer with such an artful ability to dart and flourish in different directions, experimenting and searching for new ways of creating art, breaking more boundaries than perhaps any other female singer-songwriter, it would be impossible to predict. In this case of her 13th album, Gold Dust burst out of a series of serendipitous events. Gold Dust is the second album by Tori Amos released on the classical label Deutsche Grammophon, in cooperation with Mercury Classics. Soon after she started working on the first album, the acclaimed Night of Hunters, there was a phone call from the Metropole Orchestra in the Netherlands inviting her to play with them in October 2010. Once her songs had been performed live in an orchestral setting it was clear that Tori needed to make an album. I was really touched by the orchestra and I wanted to capture that on recording she says. And so Gold Dust was conceived. Of course Tori's musical history actually began in the classical world, when she entered the prestigious Peabody Institute at the age of 5. Frustrated by the close-minded limitations the classical world imposed on her in the 70s, she checked out and headed into rock when she was 13, magnetized by its expressive and expanding possibilities, intent on expanding her sonic architecture. Now she has been pulled back to approach that world again. Music has a way of taking you by the hand and saying, it's time to create like this she explains. Times have changed and now she feels limited instead by the contemporary world and the derivative sameness of what she hears on the radio. You don't have as many complex structures in contemporary music which is why musicians are trying to explore other ways of constructing a song. But her classical training provided her with the language, tools and understanding of form and structure to create Night of Hunters and Gold Dust. So how did she go about picking the right songs out of her vast repertoire? The track-listing for Gold Dust doesn't read like a collection of her Greatest Hits. Although it includes a number of her best-loved songs - Precious Things, Silent All These Years, Winter - some of the others tracks are lesser known treasures. She compares arranging the songs in a classical setting to giving a woman a makeover, considering who she is and what style would work for her. Tori has always thought of her songs as separate women and girls and jokes: you can't say 'Oh my God bangles are in so let's put everybody in bangles!' It doesn't work like that. Some of the songs have been reinvented quite dramatically with the help of Tori s long time arranger John-Philip Shenale. The fear driven rock sounds of Precious Things and the spheric electro soundworld of Flavor came to a new form of being in the environment of a symphony orchestra. Other songs have undergone more subtle makeovers, taking, adding or changing individual colours to the beloved original versions. But all have been chosen for a reason. Almost autobiographical in structure, the songs represent stories in Tori's life. Jackie's Strength is about her relationship with her mother. Winter is about her father and grandfather. Snow Cherries from France, one of her favorites, is about falling in love with her husband. To bring them forward into 2012, Tori made a decision not to sing them as they were in the original form, and to avoid trying to be the person she was at the time. When singing Winter, for example, she had a picture of her daughter and husband chasing and catching snowflakes in front of her, reworking the story of her reworking the story of her paternal experience. less...

Amazon Says: AARON NEVILLE - MY TRUE STORY      "These songs helped to mold me into who I am," says Aaron Neville. "They're all dear to my heart, and they rode with me, in my bones, through all these years."      With MY TRUE STORY, one of the world's finest singers is revisiting the music he grew up with, and adding a few new spins along the way. Neville's first release for Blue Note Records is a collection of twelve classic doo-wop numbers, performed in his utterly inimitable vocal style, and co-produced by Blue Note President Don Was and Keith Richards.      The selections on the album include classics by such vocal-group giants as Little Anthony and the Imperials ("Tears on My Pillow"), Hank Ballard and the Midnighters ("Work With Me, Annie"), and the Drifters ("Money Honey," "Under the Boardwalk," "This Magic Moment"). To Neville, though, these songs weren't just the soundtrack to his youth; they became the underpinning for all of the remarkable music he has created across five decades.      "I attended the university of doo-wop-ology," he says. "Anything I do has got some doo-wop in it. It’s just part of me—it’s the texture that I’m singing in, it’s the endings, it's the harmonies. At 3 o’clock in the morning, I wake up with a doo-wop song going in my head and I can’t go back to sleep because I’m singing it over and over."      Yet the recordings on MY TRUE STORY aren't simply imitations of the original sessions. For one thing, some of the songs included—like the Ronettes' "Be My Baby" or "Gypsy Woman" by the Impressions—come from a slightly later time period than the classic doo-wop era, and aren't usually classified as part of the genre. But Neville explains that for him, it's not the calendar that matters, it's the vocal approach.      "Doo-wop started with five guys, like the Clovers—or five girls, like the Chantels or the Shirelles —singing harmony together on a bench or a stoop,” he says. “My own favorite place was the boys’ bathroom at school, because it had such great acoustics. So I always thought 'Be My Baby' was a doo-wop song, because it’s a lead singer with harmony singers.      “I came up in the doo-wop era, and if I heard something and thought it was doo-wop, then it was. So if it didn’t fall in that category before, then it does now!"      The other twist given to this material is that while doo-wop tended to keep the emphasis squarely on the vocalists, MY TRUE STORY sees Neville backed by a top-flight rock & roll band, led by the distinctive, propulsive guitar work of Richards himself. The other musicians include Greg Leisz on guitar (Beck, Sheryl Crow), Benmont Tench on organ (founding member of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers), George G. Receli on drums (Bob Dylan), and Tony Scherr on bass (Bill Frisell, Norah Jones).      "Doo-wop songs centered around the vocals,” says Neville. “But with these great musicians, we could highlight the musical side of it too-this record is a combination of all of it, to bring it up to date."      Richards—who Was approached when he remembered that the guitarist kept the Jive Five song "My True Story" playing on a loop in his room during the making of the Rolling Stones' Voodoo Lounge album—describes work on the album as "the perfect session." Twenty-three songs were cut in five days, all of them live and many in the first take.”      "Opportunities like this don't come 'round very often," says Richards. "I grew up with these songs, like Aaron did. It's such a pleasure to play with a voice like that, and the band all fell straight in together—I never saw such a bunch of hardened musicians act like a bunch of kids."      Neville explains that having internalized this music so deeply, he was able to show the musicians the genuine old-school feel that these songs require. "On songs like 'Ting a Ling' and 'Work with Me, Annie,' I had to kind of dance the groove I wanted," he says with a broad smile. "I had to move around and bob and weave and show them that strut like when you’re walking in New Orleans. But this band was ready for anything, they were jumping on it, and everything came out so easy."      As if all of these ingredients weren't enough, several singers from the glory days of doo-wop joined the sessions to provide backing vocals on a number of the songs, including Eugene Pitt of the Jive Five (who co-wrote the album's title song), Bobby Jay of the Teenagers, and Dickie Harmon from the Del-Vikings. Neville’s touring bass player, David Johnson, drummer, Earl Smith, Jr. and Joel Katz also lend their voices to some of the arrangements.      MY TRUE STORY represents a culmination of Aaron Neville’s incredible career, which has seen him move seamlessly back and forth between solo work and his role in the first family of New Orleans music, the Neville Brothers. His first hit single was the landmark "Tell It Like It Is," which held the Number One spot on the R&B charts for five weeks in 1967. He went on to win Grammy Awards for his triple-platinum 1989 collaboration with Linda Ronstadt Cry Like a Rainstorm, Howl Like the Wind, and reached the Country charts with the title track of 1993’s The Grand Tour. A member of the Louisiana Music Hall of Fame, his most recent project was the gospel album I Know I’ve Been Changed in 2010.      Don Was says that it was an easy decision to bring the legendary Neville to Blue Note. "Nobody sings like him," he says. "He's a great artist, a guy with integrity and excellence and authenticity—and that’s what the label is really about."      When Was and Neville discussed possible projects, the singer indicated that recording an album of doo-wop songs had long been a dream of his. He adds, though, that his recent relocation to New York City after losing his home to Hurricane Katrina, and his recent marriage, gives MY TRUE STORY additional significance.      "It’s definitely extra-meaningful," he says. "I have a new life, I’m singing to my wife Sarah. I think God knew I wanted to do it and he waited for the right moment. He made the stars align, and he said, 'Aaron, it’s time for you to do some doo-wop." less...

Amazon Says: No Beginning No End is a seamless musical experience that moves between different styles with remarkable fluidity, bound together by Jos‚ James' transcendent voice. It marks a new chapter in the artistic journey of the 33-year-old singer/songwriter. Conceived, recorded and produced independently without any recording contract, the album is his most personal statement yet. James has already established himself as a trailblazer for his intoxicating blend of jazz, hip-hop, R&B and Electronica from his previous three albums. His musical path follows its own rhyme and reason. James is a musical omnivore, an artist that resists being pigeonholed, equally at ease on stage with jazz legend McCoy Tyner as he is in the studio with rapper Oh No or Electronica pioneer Flying Lotus. less...

Amazon Says: Wolf's Law is an unashamedly intricate record. Lyrically, the record touches politics of both the personal and global type, "The Leopard And The Lung" focusing on Kenyan environmental activist (Wangari Maathai) while "Tendons" is, according to Ritzy, "the closest we have ever got to a love song, albeit a very peculiar, f***ing love song. " Throughout Wolf's Law the experience of its diverse recording locations and its influence on the thought process of its writers is tangible. With initial recording taking place in the band's home of North Wales followed by recording the bulk of the album in a cabin in Portland, Maine in midwinter with snowstorms and drifts of up to 9 foot blocking any contact with the outside world, the extremes of the natural world were bound to play a part. That the band have taken the opportunity offered with the release of Wolf's Law to further widen their horizons and their sound will come as no surprise to anyone already familiar with their work to date or their live show. less...
