Amazon Says: Paws bash out infectious, lo-fi, garage pop-rock that can quickly shift from cute melancholia to an unnerving territorial roar. On top of the pulsating fuzzy noise the three-piece produce, sit dreamy melodies that bare the bones of their author. Lyrical topics slide between sarcastic self-analysis and, onto more so than often, brutal home truths. Phil, the band's resident lyricist sums the album's themes: ''All of the lyrics are pretty much a documentation of the past 2 years. A lot of crazy things have happened in our lives some good, some horrific. I'd like to say that there is a strong feeling of positivity and hope running throughout this record, light piercing through some distinctly dark times. We're playing in this band to keep going and stay alive.'' Paws rose out of the demise of a living room recording project, that after losing a member, was renamed and redirected into a raw nerve of DIY punk/garage that's vibrant yet familiar and built on the traditions of English pop from Buzzcocks to Yuck. The band has spent its tenure opening for the likes of No Age, Wavves, Happy Birthday, The Babies, Harlem, Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti and Black Lips and that DIY spirit pops up in the fact that they've done so in spaces as diverse as bathrooms, skate parks and a particularly difficult show on the top of a double-decker bus. True to its name Cokefloat! is, as the band puts it, ''like a sugar high...with the sugar come-down.'' Recorded with Rory Atwell (of Test Icicles) at Lightship95, a floating recording studio located on a boat moored at Trinity Buoy Warf in East London, the album has managed to capture the punch of the band's live shows. Listeners can practically hear the energy vibrate out of the speakers and feel the band's smiles radiate through the ruckus with their stories about love, insecurities, self-alienation and paranoia.. Wrapped in artwork designed by comic artist and friend of the band Jessica Penfold the album is the perfect audio allegory for its namesake. Slurp it up. Feel the buzz. less...

Amazon Says: King of the Beach, the new Wavves album is an adventurous and ambitious record. It cuts deeper into the bleeding throat zatharsis and '60s sunshine soul that Wavves is known for. It also unexpectedly flips out with elements of primitive electronics and psychedelic studio experimentation. Unlike Wavves' previously released material, recorded in I haphazard bursts on Williams' laptop, King of the Beach was toiled over for three months at Sweet Tea Recording, a world-renowned studio in Oxford, Mississippi. Sweet Tea is also the home of Dennis Herring, producer of the last two Modest Mouse albums, and the man who dismantled and re-assembled the sound on this record. less...

Amazon Says: A fascinating set from three strong and contrasting musical personalities: Norwegian saxophonist, Brazilian guitarist-pianist, and US bassist making purposeful and creative music together on this previously unreleased live recording. Carta de Amor documents music captured at Munichs Amerika Haus in April, 1981. Two years on from the much-loved albums Magico and Folk Songs, the trios improvisational empathy and sensibilities were further honed by experiences as a touring group. Repertoire includes five pieces from Gismontis pen, with the title track heard in two variations, opening and closing this enthralling double album. Also heard here are Garbareks folk song arrangements and an extended, freewheeling version of his composition Spor. Charlie Haden brings in La Pasionaria, from the repertoire of the Liberation Music Orchestra and All That Is Beautiful, not previously documented on disc. Recorded by Manfred Eicher and Martin Wieland in 1981, mixed from original analog tapes by Eicher and Jan Erik Kongshaug in 24 bit/96 kHz in 2012. less...

Amazon Says: Matthew Houck has a highly distinctive artistic voice and a refreshing, rolled-sleeves approach to his work. 2007's Pride a spare and haunting work of country, southern gospel and forlorn folk-ish drone first caused ears to swivel in Phosphorescent's direction. He followed it with To Willie, then 2010's Here's To Taking It Easy, an enthusiastic plunge into country rock and rolling Americana. Now, his sixth album Muchacho flashes yet another color in the subtly shifting Phosphorescent spectrum. less...

Amazon Says: Nonesuch Records presents Nomad, from the Tuareg guitarist, singer, and songwriter Omara "Bombino" Moctar. At the invitation of The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach, the Niger-born artist and his band traveled to Nashville for the recording, helmed by Auerbach at his studio, Easy Eye Sound. Before 2009, Bombino was little known outside Saharan Africa, where his career consisted of regionally available cassettes and roles in local bands. In few years, he has begun to find a following abroad. He sold out venues across the U.S. in his first tour here, in 2011, and has garnered the praise of outlets ranging from Pitchfork to NPR's Fresh Air, whose critic Milo Miles called Bombino "a young performer with the charisma and probing imagination to become the first Tuareg star. " Auerbach, winner of the 2013 Grammy for Producer of the Year, became a fan after a friend saw him perform and thought Auerbach might appreciate his unique style of desert blues. less...

Amazon Says: One of the towering figures in American music, Don Cherry was part of the revolutionary free-bop quartet led by Ornette Coleman in the late 1950s and early 1960s, an ensemble that helped shift the conversation about jazz from chord changes and swing to freedom and energy. Always an independent spirit, Cherry brought his openness and burgeoning knowledge of traditional musics from around the world to bear on Coleman's project, lending an infectious, absolutely original air to the bold new music. By the late 1960s, the pocket-cornet player was living in Sweden, with his wife Moki Karlsson, playing with Swedish musicians from all backgrounds, seeking out exciting partners in a somewhat hippie-like atmosphere. It was in this milieu, in the summers of 1971 and 1972, that Cherry recorded the tracks for his legendary double LP, Organic Music Society, which was released on Caprice and is now reissued for the first time on CD. The sessions that comprise Organic Music Society are varied and represent several directions in Cherry's oeuvre. Only two tracks ('Elixir' and 'Relativity Suite') were recorded in a studio setting; the rest of the music was made live, in wildly divergent circumstances. Along with various top-notch Swedish players - Bengt Berger, Christer Bothén, Tommy Koverhult - the accomplices include Turkish percussionist Okay Temiz and an early appearance by the Brazilian berimbau specialist Naná Vasconcelos. Cherry himself performs on pocket cornet, but also on voice, harmonium, flute, conch shell, and piano. Compositions include some familiar material, such as 'Relativity Suite' and Pharoah Sanders' classic 'The Creator Has a Master Plan,' and fascinating material from Dollar Brand ('Bra Joe from Kilimanjaro') and even the worldminimalist composer Terry Riley ('Terry's Tune'). Some tracks are long, loose, and meditative ('North Brazilian Ceremonial Hymn'), while others are taut and bracing; on one track, a 50-piece string orchestra accompanies the band. Across the board, on Organic Music Society we find Cherry's intense interest in multicultural sounds, in the intersections of improvisation and folk music, and the expansion of jazz into a melting pot of sonic experience. less...

Amazon Says: 2013 release, the sophomore album from the superstar Country trio. Building on the musical foundation demonstrated by the band on their first album, Pioneer is steeped in Country tradition, with Rock 'n' Roll elements both on performance and songwriting. The album was produced by Dann Huff and has been listed as one of Entertainment Weekly's 12 Albums We Can't Wait For. ''When we set out to record Pioneer, the three of us drove across the country from Greeneville to Malibu to work with one of our musical superheroes, Rick Rubin,'' said Reid Perry. ''Our time in the studio with Rick was so incredible because during our early sessions he challenged us to set higher goats as songwriters.'' ''With that experience came the realization that we needed to take the music back home to Tennessee and have Dann Huff bring the songs to life with his production,'' adds Neil Perry. ''Sometimes where one starts off is not where one ends up, which is a big theme for us on Pioneer.'' less...

Amazon Says: At the heart of this album are contemporary singer-songwriters who have honed their craft by exploring the country's rural traditions. Texas native Terri Hendrix has become one of the folk world's most endearing voices and delivers the heartwarming "Prayer for My Friends," while the eclectic Josh Ritter offers a tribute to the city of "Harrisburg." RobinElla was trained in the church before launching into the public eye, while Ruthie Foster's 2002 debut earned her comparisons to Tracy Chapman, Ella Fitzgerald and Aretha Franklin. Robert Earl Keen, one of the leading stars of the movement, and Old Crow Medicine Show give a nod to America's fascination with transportation on "Ride" and "Wagon Wheel" respectively. The Little Willies, a group that includes Grammy-award winners Norah Jones contributes "It's Not You, It's Me" is taken. The development of Americana has also allowed artists who may have been considered supporting musicians to take center stage. Banjo virtuoso Alison Brown began her career as a member of Alison Krauss' Union Station before pursuing a successful solo career that earned her a Grammy in 2000. Fiddler Carrie Rodriguez's talents captured the attention of Texas legend Chip Taylor and together they have received accolades from the Americana music community. Other relative newcomers, including Kevin Kerby of Mulehead and Eliza Lynn, have found a home within Americana's walls. Kevin recorded "Frankie Lee" in 2005, while Eliza Lynn contributes the unreleased but aptly titled "Sing a New Song." A portion of Putumayo's proceeds from the sale of this CD will be donated to America's Second Harvest - The Nation's Food Bank Network, which feeds local communities who struggle with persistent hunger on a daily basis. less...

Amazon Says: Three-time GRAMMY nominee, saxophonist Boney James returns with the dynamic, genre-busting album, The Beat. One of the most successful instrumental artists of our time with sales totaling over 3 million records, James' new project fuses his R&B/Jazz roots with Latin rhythm and percussion. The initial inspiration for the record was Sergio Mendes, "Batucada (The Beat)," which is re-imagined as a funk tune, with the aid of trumpet great Rick Braun. Other special guests on the project include eclectic R&B soul singer Raheem DeVaughn and spoken word phenom The Floacist. DeVaughn is featured on the sexy, soulful single, "Maker of Love." UK poet and musician The Floacist (former partner of Marsha Ambrosius) brings a seductive flow to "The Midas (This is Why)" adding to the World Music flavor of the album. The album also includes James fresh take on Stevie Wonder's R&B/Latin classic "Don't You Worry Bout a Thing," along with originals by James that run the gamut from subtle and sophisticated with tracks like "Acalento (Lullaby)" and "Mari's Song," to high energy with "Sunset Boulevard" and "Powerhouse." less...
