Reading Mandela

The death of Nelson Mandela marks the passing of one of the monumental figures of late-twentieth-century world history. Mandela’s activism, for which he spent twenty-seven years in prison, was key to the elimination of the apartheid system of segregation in South Africa. He served as president of the newly transformed nation from 1994 to 1999. He also wrote moving accounts of his life's struggle and the epic changes he helped to bring about.
