Six Great Crime/Noir Comics

The second Sin City movie came out last weekend and, in this humble librarian's opinion, the first has never looked better as a result. Save yourself the cost of a movie ticket and wait for it to come to the library's video collection, and check out these graphic novels dripping with noir. If you want cynical, tough cities filled with brooding, magnetic personalities, then you've come to the right booklist.

Sin City Frank Miller's black and white epic about Basin City, where everyone's rotten to the core and looking to score, was the basis of movie adaptations that came out in 2005 and 2014. Everything inventive about those movies can be traced to scenes here, including the occasional splash of color when someone truly stands out in this city of woe.

Fatale / Criminal Ed Brubaker is so high up the mountain of noir writers that I can't list just one of his series and keep a clean conscience, and neither can his characters! Fatale follows a man in over his head as he tries to piece together clues regarding a mysterious woman who doesn't seem to age, and Criminal explores the crime genre at large within a gritty world. Artist Sean Phillips keeps a superhuman pace without sacrificing quality for a second, always giving these dream-like tales a realistic finish.

Parker Darwyn Cooke gives us some of the hardest-boiled adaptations this side of Richard Stark's original novels. Parker has been double-crossed twice over, including by his partners and his lover, but never loses his cool in pursuing revenge. Cooke's trademark style is in full force here, with each of his stories bathed in a different chromatic scheme while always outlined in black.

100 Bullets The premise begs a reader: what would these different characters do if they were given a gun, 100 untraceable bullets, and loads of background information on the person/people who messed up their lives? What seems like a flat premise for revenge turns into a series of surprises, espionage, and conspiracy, with Brian Azzarello supplying the story and Eduardo Risso revealing a great deal of it in light, shadow, and body language.

Gotham Central "What if there was a Batman story about the cops in Gotham City, with next to no Batman in it?" This is that story, and Batman would probably be honored that this series eclipses his own several times over in its portrayal of protectors of the peace dealing with the psychopaths of Gotham as well as issues that hit close to home. Comprises four volumes total, but you will wish for more.

Amazon Says: In 1962, Donald E. Westlake, writing under the pseudonym Richard Stark, created what would become one of the most important and enduring crime fiction series ever produced - Parker. Westlake wrote more than 20 Parker novels, many considered classics of the genre, and a number of which have transitioned to the big screen. Most notable of these is Point Blank, directed by John Boorman and starring Lee Marvin, released in 1967. Westlake received many accolades during his distinguished career, including being named a Grand Master by the Mystery Writer's of America, that prestigious organization's highest honor. Darwyn Cooke has adapted four Parker books as graphic novels so far. The first three, The Hunter, The Outfit, and The Score have all won Eisner and Harvey Awards. He will be providing all-new color illustrations for The Hunter, the first in a series of hardcover prose novels released in chronological order and featuring Cooke's art. The Hunter, the first book in the Parker series, is the story of a man who hits New York head-on like a shotgun blast to the chest. Betrayed by the woman he loves and double-crossed by his partner in crime, Parker makes his way cross-country with only one thought burning in his mind - to coldly exact his revenge and reclaim what was taken from him! less...

Darwyn Cooke, multiple Eisner-Award winning creator of such works as DC: The New Frontier and Selina's Big Score, now follows up The Hunter with the forthcoming release of The Outfit, the second of four planned adaptations of Richard Stark's Parker novels. less...
