Something New: March 5, 2013
This week Richland Library has many new and upcoming releases ready for checkout or to be requested, so peruse the choices listed below, because you are sure to find a great read among them.
Two of my favorite authors are out with new books this week and I can’t wait to get reading! My chief question will be which book should I start first?
Patricia Briggs is out with Frost Burned, the seventh novel in the Mercy Thompson series, an urban fantasy series set in Washington State. The main character is Mercy Thompson (Mercy is short for Mercedes), a Volkswagen mechanic who can shape shift into a Coyote. Although she is now the mate of the local Werewolf alpha, she also has friends and enemies among the local Vampire and Fae communities. If you like urban fantasy and have not yet read these books I urge you to give them a try. They are a fast paced read with just the right amount of suspense and romance.
C.S. Harris, is out with the eighth book in the Sebastian St. Cyr series, What Darkness Brings. This is a historical mystery/thriller series set in Regency England and Sebastian St. Cyr, Viscount Devlin, has a habit of finding himself in the middle of dark and tangled mysteries. With the aid of his newlywed wife, Hero, who also happens to be the daughter of one of his enemies, and his surgeon friend, Paul Gibson, Sebastian St. Cyr solves crimes and ferrets out secrets at all levels of society. C.S. Harris holds advanced degrees in history and she always includes rich historical detail in her books. If you enjoy historical fiction with fast paced action you many enjoy these novels described on Ms. Harris’s website as “Mr. Darcy with a James Bond edge”.
If nonfiction is more your thing, and since March is Women’s History Month, you might want to try The Secretary: A Journey with Hillary Clinton from Beirut to the Heart of American Power by Kim Ghattas or perhaps Justice Sandra Day O’Connor’s Out or Order: Stories from the History of the Supreme Court. Secretary of State Clinton is the most travelled Secretary of State in history, travelling to over a hundred countries and close to a million miles. Ghattas, a BBC reporter, travelled with Secretary Clinton as part of her press corps and had a close up view of Ms. Clinton at work. Justice O’Connor, the first woman to sit on the U.S. Supreme Court, says that with this book she hoped to “share a different side of the Supreme Court. Most people know the Court only as it exists between bangs of the gavel, when the Court comes to order to hear arguments or give opinions. But the stories of the Court and the Justices that come from the ‘out of order’ moments add to the richness of the Court as both a branch of our government and a human institution.”
