Read It Before You See It: Warm Bodies
January 28 , 2013 by Heather McCueI have to admit that I have a bit of an obsession when it comes to zombies. Since reading Carrie Ryan's Forest of Hands and Teeth, I have a weird fascination with the undead and what happens afterwards. So, of course, I knew that I had to read Warm Bodies before I was first in line at the movie theater on February 1st to see it. I have to say that it had me at "I am dead, but it's not so bad." I haven't read much zombie fiction from the perspective of said undead. Typically, it's because they're protrayed as mindless eating machines without much going on upstairs. Warm Bodies is definitely different. Its leading man is "R", a zombie with a wife and kids. He has a nice home at the airport and a group of fellow undead who is always willing to go hunting for fresh--dare I say it--brains. But R wants more. When he encounters a teenage scavenging crew in an abandoned building, he finally gets a taste of what more is...literally. As the memories of Perry Kelvin flood his mind, R is filled with connection to Julie, a very alive, screaming girl who stands before him. To everyone's surprise (including the zombies'), he protects Julie from the inevitable and takes her back to his home. It's easy to cheer for R, his longing for Julie and his desire for something to make his afterlife worth living. Check back in after February 1st for some chat about the movie and feel free to let us know what you thought about Warm Bodies, the book or movie.
