Download Anonymity--Janna McMahan’s fictional chronicle of a teen facing very real challenges--for free starting August 24 from Amazon. Anonymity tells the story of Emily, a bartender who picks up her camera to help a handsome reporter cover the street punks of Austin, and Lorelei, an elusive and tough member of the gutter world. It can be downloaded as a free Kindle e-book for one week starting Saturday, August 24.
Writes the author, who calls Columbia home:
I wanted to portray young street culture in a realistic manner, so I interviewed people and prowled around in the areas where these kids hang out. I interviewed some who were willing to talk and I found them to be clever and capable. They have to exist in an adult world with no resources and still keep their humanity. They can be engaging and funny, but they are also angry and lonely. They're a diverse and interesting bunch and I really connected with some of them. I've shared this book with a few of the kids and they loved it. One young man said Anonymity was, "Righteous." He's a harsh critic, so I place high value his positive review.
Two of Richland Library’s book clubs will be discussing the book this fall--Wheatley on September 21 and Northeast on November 14. Janna McMahan will join both discussions to talk about the book and answer questions.
Also in November, Richland Library will host a community panel discussion on youth homelessness entitled “Living on the Edge: Youth Homelessness in Columbia.” Join us on Sunday, November 17 at 3 p.m. in Bostick Auditorium at Main to hear about challenges facing the homeless youth of Columbia and measures we can take to address this issue.
