Wow! Check out the Dow.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA) first appeared on May 26, 1896. A national depression, caused by the panic of 1893, was “close to having run its course” and many industries and large corporations were seeking national markets.

Charles Henry Dow, a young newspaperman, predicted that these companies could constitute “the great speculative market of the future” and he subsequently invented the DJIA by creating an index of 12 industrials which began at 40.94. GE is the only survivor among the current 30 Dow stocks.

On Tuesday, May 7, 2013 (117 years later) the Dow hit a milestone - 15,024. Surely Mr. Dow could not have imagined that his vision would reach such an incredible high. Up until a few weeks ago, the last twenty Tuesdays have shown continued growth.

You might ask – what does 15,000 mean to me personally? Probably nothing profoundly significant. However, it could be an impetus to review your portfolio and continue if you are already an investor or, to jump on board if you have never considered investing. Your success could possibly be as unimaginable as Mr. Dow’s.

Amazon Says: This classic text is annotated to update Graham's timeless wisdom for today's market conditions... The greatest investment advisor of the twentieth century, Benjamin Graham, taught and inspired people worldwide. Graham's philosophy of "value investing" -- which shields investors from substantial error and teaches them to develop long-term strategies -- has made The Intelligent Investor the stock market bible ever since its original publication in 1949. Over the years, market developments have proven the wisdom of Graham's strategies. While preserving the integrity of Graham's original text, this revised edition includes updated commentary by noted financial journalist Jason Zweig, whose perspective incorporates the realities of today's market, draws parallels between Graham's examples and today's financial headlines, and gives readers a more thorough understanding of how to apply Graham's principles. Vital and indispensable, this HarperBusiness Essentials edition of The Intelligent Investor is the most important book you will ever read on how to reach your financial goals. less...
