You don't have to spend money on fancy gadgets to figure out the weather conditions in your neighborhood. There's a great local resource - free of charge!
The Richland County Weather Information Network Data System (RC WINDS) collects real-time data from more than 60 weather stations, based around the county, and it updates every three minutes.
With the click of a button, you can access temperature, humidity, wind direction, wind speed, barometric pressure and rainfall amounts. This information is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
Some of the locations with weather stations, include:
- Administrative buildings
- Police departments
- Fire stations
- Popular attractions (Edventure; Williams Brice Stadium; ect)
You also have access to historical weather data from each of these weather stations, dating back to their installation dates.
Initially unveiled in 2013, RC WINDS is the first county-owned weather monitoring system in the nation. The project is possible thanks to funding from individual grant awards, emergency management grants and charitable organizations.
