With over 7,000 images in the Local History Digital Collections it can be hard to find those hidden gems. Take a look at what your neighbors found interesting in October, 2020.
The Walker Local and Family History Center maintains a healthy collection of historic photographs, postcards and other local memorabilia. A selection of these are online in the Local History Digital Collections, with new additions each week. Each month I’ll share the most popular images from the previous month. Below are the top 5 images from October, 2020.
5) Jupiter Missile donated to Columbia at fairgrounds, 1963. From The State Newspaper Photograph Archive.
Major General Emmett B. Cassady presents a Jupiter missile to Columbia Mayor Pro-Tempore Hyman Rubin and Council member William C. Ouzts, who are representing the City. The Jupiter will stand on the fairgrounds to commemorate American space exploration. The Jupiter is known locally as The Rocket.

Governor Hollings addresses the South Carolina General Assembly to open the 1960 legislative session. The House chamber looks different today, with new desks, carpeting installed over the tile floor, and a (slightly) more diverse elected body.

Members of the U.S. Women's Army Corps receive drill instruction at Fort Jackson. Pictured (but no order identified) are Sgt. Sylvia M. Dobson, Ada L. Mercado, Ellen F. Garvey, Ladina L.
