This monthly artist spotlight series was created to highlight artists in the community who have been impacted by racial, gender, and socio-economic inequities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Meet: MILAH

Pronouns: She/Her

Bio: Milah is a Rapper/Singer/Songwriter/Producer born in Columbia, SC. Her style is a fusion between laid-back and upbeat vibes. Milah believes in expressing personal experiences through storytelling in her music. She delivers a mixture of nostalgia and rawness that keeps her listeners engaged. Her biggest musical influences are Drake, Ms. Lauryn Hill, and Missy Elliott.

How has the COVID-19 pandemic impacted you?

The pandemic has mostly affected my ability to book shows, but I'm also an introvert and accustomed to being home most days. On a personal level, a long-lasting effect would be the unexpected loss of friends and family to covid.

What social barriers have you had to face as an artist in this community?

I've experienced more social barriers early on in my career as an artist. I was pushed to try to make people feel comfortable listening to my music, versus being encouraged to speak my truth as an artist. That included possible managers asking me to change my look, and use gender-neutral phrases in my lyrics.  Today I won't say that everyone accepts me, but I believe if one door closes a bigger one will always open.

What is your biggest need that would be most helpful to you right now?

My biggest need right now would be a new computer. I produce, record, mix and master my own material. I create everything from my marketing materials, covers, and videos. My computer is a little dated at the moment and would like a chance to upgrade to produce better material.

What are you most passionate about in your work?

I'm most passionate about my creativity.  I cherish it, so I usually write and record alone. I use sage and palo santo to clear my energy and move from there.

Each month, the community is given the opportunity to support and connect with different creatives and enjoy the amazing talent Columbia has to offer!

To learn more or to hear Milah's music, including her latest album "Been Love and Liquor", check her out on Apple Music or on any major streaming platforms

You can visit her website beenmilah.com, or find her on social @beenmilah.
