Writing with your child does not have to be a chore. Writing is self-expression. Help your child develop strong writing skills while having a good time!
Master the skills in Writing: Part 1 and Writing: Part 2, then jump into these 2nd grade writing standards.
Writing opens up the world of communication for our children. Children can use writing to express themselves in a journal, write a poem, craft stories, share recipes, send a letter or email, and much more.
How will I know if my child has reached the South Carolina standards for writing in second grade?
- My child can print legibly and is beginning to develop cursive writing.
- My child is continuing to learn punctuation and English grammar.
- My child explores books and other materials to pick a topic to write about, introduce the topic, state an opinion, give reasons that support that opinion, and provide a closing sentence.
- My child can plan, revise, and edit to better focus on a topic to improve writing.
- My child writes often on various topics both in and out outside the classroom.
- My child continues to work on keyboarding skills.
Activities and Multimedia:
Journaling:
I have kept a journal since I was seven or eight years old. Going back to look at my early musings gives me a window into the child I once was. Keeping a journal is a delightful way to practice writing skills with children. Keep it simple and let the child set the rules. Do they want to draw illustrations? Write lyrics to a song? Write about their day at school? Giving your child a way to express themselves freely and safely is a great mental health practice and a fun way to explore writing skills.
