Anyone who knows me, knows that I love food and trying new dishes. I will spend hours looking up recipes or researching new restaurants to try. With the amount of new food I try I thought I should share some recommendations and experience for those in search of something new.
Recently I noticed a new restaurant called Bruno's Taqueria. I happened upon it while downtown. And let me tell you I am so glad that I did. Bruno's offers authentic Mexican food that is absolutely delicioso! I was so excited to see the variety of different foods that they offered. They had everything from tacos to ceviche. I was particularly excited that they had tortas which brought back childhood nostalgia of food comas spent on the couch. But for those who don't know what tortas are. It is a Mexican sandwich with soft fluffy bread, with a spread of butter on it. And inside this magical creation you will find meat, refried beans, avocado, peppers, tomatoes, lettuce, onions, and cheese. They gave me the option of my choice of meat and I chose carne asada which is grilled sliced beef. Tortas are basically the love child of a sandwich and taco.
Historically there is a lot of debate of where and when the torta was created. Some historians claim it was created in Publea, South Central Mexico before the Mexican- American War. Others claim it was created by a man named Armando Martinez Centurion who lived in Mexico City in 1892. The word torta itself comes from Spain and is used to describe a type of cake, sandwich, or in some instances a kind of flat bread. Not to be confused with tortillas. Regardless of when and where it was created, tortas are an amazing sandwich that are a must try.
