There is nothing quite like live musical theater, where anything can happen. I’ve seen Bernadette Peters receive a standing ovation in the middle of Hello, Dolly! I watched as the actress playing Eva Peron in Evita had to make a quick grab to save the wig that was falling off her head. Live theater is magical and I love it! The singing and the dancing. The costumes and the set design. The butterflies in my stomach when the curtain goes up.
And I’ve missed it during this drought when Broadway has been closed, and traveling tours canceled, and local theater put on hold. But now that Broadway has announced it’s reopening in September, and local theaters are preparing for new seasons, and traveling show tours are being booked I can't stop myself from singing with excitement. I'm getting antsy to be back in the theater to see some of my favorites…and to enjoy a few new shows, too.
Until then, the show must go on...from home. Check out these DVD or Blu-ray musical theater productions to bring the joy home. And be sure to check out local theaters for upcoming shows. You don’t want to miss the curtain rising and the spotlight shining again.
