In April I wrote a blog post about odes: a lyrical poetic form that celebrates or addresses the subject. The extra credit challenge was to choose a person, place, thing, or idea that generally doesn't bring joy or admiration and describe the subject in such a way that we all have a new appreciation for it. Recently a friend challenged me to write an ode to masks. So...this one’s for you, Pam.
Ode to a Mask
Kate B.
Before spring 2020,
I thought masks were only for Halloween;
then came COVID.
I used to plan my outfits
around my shoes.
Now I decide what to wear based on which mask is clean.
Sure face coverings are hot;
they can rub raw spots
behind my ears and leave marks on my cheeks...
And maskne is a real thing.
But as time continues and I’m still wearing a mask,
I need a new attitude.
So I salute you masks.
I applaud you face coverings.
My mask hides my lipstick,
but lets my personality shine through.
Fabric face coverings that
display my love of travel,
show I’m an ally,
share my passions.
My mask demands I slow down…
put aside my fast-talker tendencies, and
focus on my projection,
my enunciation,
my elocution.
My whole body must be used in greeting;
no longer is a single smile enough.
Now I must shout “Hello!”
Smile with my eyes and voice,
while giving a wave with my hand.
I’ve never been friendlier or more welcoming
than when saying hello with my mask on.
I eat lunch without fear of a stray seed
stuck in my teeth,
or worry that Cheeto dust lingers on my lips.
My mask can save me from these social embarrassments.
Mostly I must remember,
I must celebrate
my mask,
my face covering,
is armor against aerosolized particles,
is protection for myself and others,
is one small thing I can do for the greater good.
