In Islam Muharram is the first month of the Islamic lunar calendar. This month is viewed as a sacred time and fasting and doing good deeds are highly recommended. During this month is the day of Ashurah. Ashurah falls on the 10th day of Muharram. This day is especially important because this is the day that Prophet Moses lead the Israelites out of Egypt and to freedom. In celebration and recognition of this. Muslims fast the day of Ashurah. It is also highly recommended to fast the day before as well as the day after. Since this month is sacred and filled with many blessings, being generous to one’s family and giving in charity is encouraged as well.
