One of my favorite books is Mexican Gothic by Silvia Moreno-Garcia, the author’s latest book. The genre is Gothic horror. The story is set in 1950s Mexico.
Noemí Taboada received a strange letter from her newly-wed cousin who begged for someone to save her from a mysterious doom. So Noemí traveled to High Place, an isolated mansion in the Mexican countryside. She wasn’t sure what she would find. She found her cousin, with her husband, a handsome Englishman, whom Noemí saw the first time, the husband's father, who was an ancient patriarch. In the High Place, Noemí began to have daytime dreams and the house slowly changed her. Her only ally was the housekeeper’s youngest son. Shy and gentle, the son tried to help Noemí escape, but he hid the family’s darkest secret from her. The family once had colossal wealth from a now fading mining empire and that kept them from prying eyes, but as Noemí dug deeper, she learned stories of violence and madness. The world of High Place was terrifying but seductive, mesmerizing Noemí such that it was almost impossible for her to ever leave.
If you like fantasy and horror, this will be the perfect read for you!
